Kevin Francis Gray Mid-Career Retrospective at Market Place Gallery, Armagh

16 March to 13 April
Opening Thursday 16 March, 7pm

Kevin Francis Gray Mid-Career Retrospective at Market Place Gallery is taking place as part of the Home of St Patrick Festival. Born in Armagh in 1972, Gray returns to his hometown for this unique solo exhibition of sculptural works from the last decade with diverse materials from resin and plaster to porcelain, bronze and marble.

Gray’s exhibition focus’ on his career up until late 2015, showcasing his early investigations into material from resin to porcelain; from bronze to marble. This varied selection of work gives a glimpse into the range of personal inspirations Gray draws from both his life growing up in South Armagh and the wider context of living and working in East London and its surrounding neighbourhood.

This exhibition comes at a pivotal moment in his career, as Gray develops new artistic language using exclusively marble: further pushing what he sees as the possible limits of the material, as well as the opportunity to contextualise an otherwise classic material in a contemporary conversation.

Ciné Concert: Torrey Pines at Irish Film Institute

Monday 27 March, 8.30pm

Animator and musician Clyde Petersen’s debut film is an autobiographical stop-motion animation which touches on issues of mental health and gender identity. It recounts the time when 12-year-old Clyde, uncomfortable in the body in which he was born, was brought on a road trip across America by his schizophrenic mother, who had done so without the knowledge of Clyde’s father, who then reported the child kidnapped. Subtle and moving, it’s also laced with humour, best exemplified by a scene in which the two attend a Whitney Houston concert.

The event will begin with a short set from Dublin band Pillow Queens. Live accompaniment to the film will be provided by members of Your Heart Breaks, Clyde Petersen’s musical collective. Tickets €10

Ceramics Residency Programme 2017 Limerick School of Art and Design

Deadline: 31 May 2017

The benefits of exposure to professional practitioners has long been recognised by the LSAD Ceramics programme.
Artists begin their residency in mid-September. Over the course of their residency, participants make a number of presentations on their practice and give a demonstration of skills that are specific to their making processes. The residency culminates in an exhibition of work completed during the participant’s time within the ceramics programme. This is accompanied by an exhibition of process, demonstrating both the creative process and the technical development of the work.
We welcome applicants from the breadth of ceramic practice, selecting two annually to work within the ceramics facilities for six months. The residency benefits both practitioner and students through an exchange of experience, skills, materials and facilities and affords students a valuable opportunity to work alongside and engage with professionals in practice.
To date we have had four residents, Gemma Dardis and Maeve Haugh in 2015 and Kate O’Kelly and Mary Conroy in 2016.

Artlink Fort Dunree, Co. Donegal

Artlink presents ‘Objectecture’ a selection of works by Kevin McLaughlin.

‘Objectecture’ is an exhibition of sculptural works that showcases for the first time McLaughglin’s long term engagement with assemblage, constructions and found objects. This body of work seeks to draw on and explore overlooked aspects of non-typical sculptural materials. Some of these sculptures have been ‘in process’ for up to 8 years.

The Olivier Cornet Gallery is delighted to present ‘Projections’, a solo show by gallery artist John Fitzsimons. This is Fitzsimons’s fourth solo exhibition with the Olivier Cornet Gallery who has represented the artist since 2011.
John Fitzsimons’s latest exhibition, entitled ‘Projections’, takes a darker and more foreboding turn than his previous work to date, reflecting the current international political climate and associated nervousness about the path that lies ahead. This collection, a series of surrealist landscapes, presents us with a series of ominous, hypnagogic premonitions into the future.

Secret Garden | Marilyn Gaffney at Custom House Studios

23 March to 16 April
Opening 23 March at 7.30pm by Dermot Seymour

Marilyn Gaffney’s exhibition “Secret Garden” gets lost in the foliage, curves of the flowers and yet it is not about the beauty of the domestic landscape itself, but the subconscious marks that are made which outlines and caresses the space within these literal subjects on the canvas. In her new body of work, Marilyn Gaffney creates paintings of the domestic landscape.

The act of her art making is a psychological process, automatic painting. Start at the passage and get lost down the track, into the foliage. The artist transends her thought process to another platform as the artwork progresses and she is semi aware of the marks she is making to the canvas.

The landscape, Gaffney believes, holds thought for magic, escapism, wonder and home. It has been a subject of hers for some time now within her practice. Psychological interests such as memory within the landscape still resonate with the artist.
