Open Call | STARTS Prize 2018

Deadline: March 2nd, 2018
STARTS Prize – Grand prize of the European Commission honoring Innovation in Technology, Industry and Society stimulated by the Arts.

On behalf of the European Commission, Ars Electronica in collaboration with BOZAR and Waag Society is issuing an open call for entries to a competition that will determine the third recipients of STARTS Prize, prestigious and—with two €20,000 prizes—highly endowed awards. Expressly encouraged are innovative projects at the interface of science, technology and art.
There are no entry fees.
Science, Technology and Arts (=STARTS) form a nexus with an extraordinarily high potential for creative innovation. And such innovation is considered to be precisely what’s called for if we’re to master the social, ecological and economic challenges that Europe will be facing in the near future. The role of artists thus is no longer seen to be just about propagating scientific and technological knowledge and skills among the general public but much more as a kind of catalyst that can inspire and trigger innovative processes. The artistic practice of creative exploration and experimental appropriation of new technologies has a wide reaching potential to contribute to the development of new products and new economic, social and business models. Accordingly, the STARTS Prize focuses on artistic works that influence or change the way we look at technology, and on innovative forms of collaboration between the ICT sector and the world of art and culture.

TBG+S Announces International Residency Recipients 2018 | Caroline Doolin + Kathy Tynan

Temple Bar Gallery + Studios is delighted to announce artist Caroline Doolin as recipient of the 2018 HIAP (Helsinki International Artist Programme) Residency and artist Kathy Tynan has been awarded a residency in Paris as part of the Cité Internationale des Arts programme.
From February to April this year, Caroline Doolin will spend six weeks at the HIAP residency facility at the Cable Factory, Helsinki. Caroline Doolin works primarily in narrative moving image with a particular interest in navigating the specific audio-visual constraints of the gallery context. During her residency at HIAP she will research and develop the early stages of a new video installation informed by the status of Suomenlinna island as a UNESCO heritage site. With attentive focus on the particular ecology of Suomenlinna, she aims to explore intricate webs of difference within the everyday; drawing connections between and generating empathy for specific sites, species and organisms.
Kathy Tynan will work from a studio in Paris for three months in 2018. During her residency, Kathy will spend time discerning the recurrent motifs and patterns of the City. She will focus particularly on interventional man-made marks which feel strange or out of place within the urban landscape.
