Monday 21 May 2012, 6pm | 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2 | Admission free | The Bauhaus was the twentieth-century's most important and influential experiment in design education. Founded in 1919 in Weimar, Germany, by Walter Gropius, it moved to Dessau in 1926, and to Berlin in 1933, where it closed within months of the establishment of the Third Reich. Its faculty included many of the most important abstract artists of the day.

The emigration of many Bauhäusler, as staff and students alike termed themselves, from Germany helped disperse its ideas around the world, where they were often equated (not always correctly) with principled opposition to Naziism. This lecture will focus on new themes in Bauhaus scholarship, including the increasing recognition being accorded the work of the women who taught and studied there. It will also refer to the exhibition with the same title which is currently on show at London's Barbican. | Further Information: T: 01 6611155 | E:arts@dublin.goethe.org

May 26, 2012 | 3:00pm | Ormston House, 9-10 Patrick Street, Limerick City, Ireland | In this afternoon talk, controversial Dutch artist TINKEBELL shares an insight into her artistic practice. This event is organized as part of the ‘Dogs’ group exhibition in Ormston House, curated by Rachael Corcoran as part of SOMA Contemporary Projects. Admission is free. TINKEBELL provokes by exemplifying the blind spots of modern society. She confronts a public that revels in being indignant about everything that has nothing to do with them, but at the same time is very apologetic about their own actions. She questions why millions of male chicks are brutally killed every day (often by throwing them against the walls of a barn) but she gets arrested for threatening to do the same in public. Why are people who openly discuss the lowering of the sexual age of consent treated as vile paedophiles, but are 'barely 18' websites intensely popular? For further information on her practice, please see www.looovetinkebell.com [1] | www.somacontemporary.com [2] | www.ormstonhouse.com [3]

Wednesday 22 May 3 - 5pm | Queen's University Belfast, 12 University Sq. Room 101 | Gail Ritchie, visual artist, will present an illustrated talk on her recent practice which has core themes of culture, conflict and memorial. Using specific artworks the presentation begins with an examination of the forms of 20th century war memorials and ends with proposals for new forms that reinvigorate existing models. The artist will discuss how she reactivates the past in her work and how this is informed by research across several areas: literature and film, site visits, on line, archival and interview. The artist seeks to locate her work somewhere between Monuments and memorials, where the former may be perceived as large scale and permanent and the latter, more localised and intimate. How, as a contemporary artist working in the 21st century , does she reconstruct and commemorate the past in her work? Ritchie works across a range of media from drawing, sculpture, installation, photography and sound. The art works in this presentation will relate to the First and Second World Wars, the Cold War , recent conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan and conclude with work which explores the possibility of a universal memorial for all 20th century conflict | www.gailritchie.com [1]

29 April 2012 | 3pm - 4pm | In September 2011, New York artist Molly Crabapple, locked herself in a hotel room, covered the walls in paper, and filled 270 square feet of wall with art. The project, called "Molly Crabapple's Week in Hell," is a wild ride through the imagination of an artist stretching herself to the limits of her endurance. The project was 573% funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign which garnered 745 backers. They watched the whole week unfold in live webcasts with the artist, following Molly Crabapple into the madness of art. Now, it's also a book. Molly Crabapple is an award winning artist, author, and the founder of Dr.Sketchy’s Anti-Art School, the largest chain of art salons in the world. More than that, she is a hugely successful entrepreneur. Molly has succeeded in finding ways to fund and create uncompromising, personally fulfilling art and on 29th April at 3pm, in the appropriately named Centre for Creative Practises, Molly will share her thoughts, experiences and ideas on art and entrepreneurship | www.cfcp.ie [1] | www.mollycrabapple.com [2]| www.drsketchysdublin.com [3]

17 - 20 May 2012 | The Penzance Convention is a three-day international interdisciplinary meeting of artists, curators, writers, scientists, historians, philosophers and experts from other fields. It builds on the legacy of The Falmouth Convention, held in May 2010, and again opens with daylong field trips led by artists and experts from other fields, followed by conference presentations and debates. It draws on histories specific to the far West of Cornwall, bringing in parallel narratives from other parts of the world and focusing on relationships with place.

The Convention reflects on the theme of extraction, taking as its starting point the social and environmental legacies of Cornwall's extractive industries mining, fishing and farming in particular. It takes extraction as a metaphor for the creative process, reflecting on the processes by which artists draw meaning from history and site. Social historian Iain Boal will give a keynote on the evening of Thursday 17 May, comparing Cornwall and the northern California littoral as zones of extraction.Conference speakers include artists Miroslaw Balka, John Gerrard, Lucy Gunning and Nils Norman, Allen Buckley, author of The Story of Mining in Cornwall, Esther Leslie of Birkbeck College, University of London, author of Synthetic Worlds, Shaun Lewin of the University of Plymouth, philosopher Robin Mackay, editor of the journal Collapse, Kasia Redzisz, Assistant Curator at Tate Modern, Andrea Schlieker, curator of the Folkestone Triennial, 2008 and 2011, Dr Robin Shail of Camborne School of Mines, and Sally Tallant, Artistic Director of the Liverpool Biennial.
19 April | 10am – 4pm | 'Of All Places' is a project curated by Hilary Murray and developed in conjunction with Brian Duggan’s 'Three Lives' installation and will take the format of a talk session and discussion panel taking place over one day at the theatre space in RUA RED. This project aims to further elucidate the notion of geographical space as opposed to the cued, interactive (or relational) aspect to place. Why is the artwork often situated within a space (the gallery space), rather than a place? Does this lack of relational intent in the display of art create an irrevocable break in the artwork-viewer dynamic or does it simply provide a neutral situation for the objective contemplation and display of art? Full details including list of speakers www.ruared.ie/Of_All_Places.html

In keeping with our thread of enquiry for the year, Truths and Realities, Real and Imagined, Mermaid is delighted to present a talk by internationally renowned and award-winning photographer Simon Norfolk. In October 2010, Norfolk began a series of new photographs in Afghanistan, taking his cue from the work of nineteenth-century Wicklow photographer, John Burke. Norfolk’s photographs reimagine or respond to Burke’s Afghan war scenes in the context of the contemporary conflict. Conceived as a collaborative project with Burke across time, here Norfolk discusses this project in what promises to be an enlightening and lively exploration of those strange bedfellows - art and war.

Sarah Browne & Jesse Jones, ‘The Original Affluent Society’
The Geology Museum, Trinity College Dublin & Project Arts Centre
Thursday 16 June 2011, 1pm - 2pm.

'Poverty is not a certain small amount of goods, nor is it just a relation between means and ends; above all it is a relation between people.' (Marshall Sahlins, 1972)

Project Arts Centre presents an event led by artists Sarah Browne and Jesse Jones. Taking its departure from Browne’s current exhibition, Second Burial at Le Blanc, the discussion will begin in the Geology Museum, Trinity College Dublin with a presentation of extracts from anthropologist Marshall Sahlins’ book Stone Age Economics. Sahlins’ idea of ‘the original affluent society’ proposed a re-visioning of hunter-gatherer societies from being ‘primitive’ to seeing them as practitioners of a refined mode of subsistence, from which much can be learned. The group will then move onwards, via the Central Bank on Dame Street, to Project Arts Centre for a brief discussion focused on themes of economic ritual, invented tradition and obsolescence as explored by the work in Second Burial at Le Blanc.

As a precaution, please remember to pack your umbrella. And please note, this will be a recorded event. Attendance is free but places are limited; please contact the gallery for reservations.
