On Saturday the 19th of May, in celebration of National Drawing Day, The Model is running two drawing events for the public to participate in. These events are suitable for all abilities and provide an ideal opportunity to encourage people to try their hand at drawing in the presence of an art professional. Drawing is a universal language understood by all. There will be a morning and afternoon session, with an offer of 25 to attend both sessions!

11am -1.00pm | Sligo Abbey | E 15 | This outdoor drawing event will be led by Sligo artist Aine O’Gara. You are invited to draw in response to your senses and the iconic surrounding of the ancient Sligo Abbey. Drawing inspiration from from dark canvermous rooms and light drenched cloister arcades, create your own charcoal piece and contribute also to a group piece that will be hung on the Abbey railings. Characol and drawing pads will be provided.

2.30 -5.30pm | Education Room at The Model | E 15 Drawing from the Landscape | A drawing workshop led by artist Micheal Wann. Using the mediums of charcoal, water and pencil the group will experience the wide and versatile imperfection of the drawing process. How both vital and flawed elements of mark-making mean that the spontaneous and accidental become of equal importance to that of the rational and intentional.

Booking is essential for both events : www.themodel.ie/education/national-drawing-day-sligo-abbey [1]

4 - 26 May | Opening Fri 4 May at 7.30pm | Castlebar, Co. Mayo | Sinead Ni Mhaonaigh's paintings are, according to art critic Aidan Dunne, “poised between austerity and luxuriance. Structurally they are often spare and concise, featuring simplified geometric motifs, but their surfaces are luscious, consisting of thick coats of rich oil pigment, beautifully textured.” Her practice explores the liminal space between object and form, and within their expressive eloquence they also explores the very act of painting itself. Sinéad is based in Dublin. Her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally, and is included in many public collections, including Contemporary Irish Arts Society, Arts Council of Ireland and the OPW. In 2009 she was shortlisted for the AIB Art Prize and was selected for Futures exhibition at the RHA Gallagher Gallery, while in 2010 she won the Hennessy Craig Scholarship at the RHA | www.thelinenhall.com [1]

‘Faces of Sligo Town’ is a commissioned photographic project by Sligo Arts Service, Sligo County Council for the Bealtaine Festival 2012. The work is based on Sligo town shops and the people who run them. The theme of the project celebrates the generational link in family run shops which, over the years, continue to give character and a face to our streets. Twenty premises from barber, jewellery, sweet to clothing shops took part in the project over a three month period. Running alongside the Exhibition in the Hawk’s Well Theatre is a photographic window exhibition; project shops will display an A2 photographic work .This is part of ‘Sligoe 400’, celebrating Four Hundred Years of the Borough of Sligo.

Over the last 30 years Vivienne Roche has worked in large-scale bronze, glass, steel, sailcloth, stuccodore plaster, and reconfigured landscape. Drawing, watercolour and photography have also been central to her work. Her artistic
themes derive from site-specific dialogues between architecture and sculpture, the emotional resonances of the coastal landscape in which she lives, relationships between male and female, archaeology sites and their artefacts, and between music and the visual. Light has been a central focus as is evidenced in recent work. www.hamiltongallery.ie [1]

Sponsored by Sligo County Council the residency involves a research period of two months on the coast in Easkey, County Sligo followed by one month producing the work for exhibition 'Farming Life' at Leitrim Sculpture Centre. For Masuyama the work is always firmly located in the social contexts in which it is made and so it is no surprise that the rural contexts of counties Sligo and Leitrim became the focus of his present work. Masuyama draws attention to the everyday practices of rural cultures and the reciprocal relationship of people and their surrounding environment.
3 - 27 May | Opening 3 May at 6.00pm at Westport Quay | ‘Atlantic Trees’ is a project which aims to deliver a series of site specific tree paintings. Emma has long been fascinated by the shape trees adopt on the West Coast of Ireland. This shape, or form, presents as a distinctive windblown profile, one that is sculpted by the elements. The proximity of the Atlantic Ocean is a major determining factor in terms of influencing and moulding the shape of the trees. She sees this physical manifestation of ‘shape’ as having spiritual, psychological, elemental and socio-historical dimensions. Trees have an energy which absorbs, responds and emits in a cyclical, generational, manner. It is her intention to capture these layers, through the medium of art and to share her vision in a way that the observer can connect to and re-establish an already existing relationship with past, present and future | www.customhousestudios.ie [1]

The artists in this show reflect on the everyday experiences of materials, of literature, music, our interaction with knowledge and the incomprehensible phenomena of aspects outside of ourselves, which we accept but may not understand. The artists’ processes and the physical outcome is the telling of their journey, and the choices and mistakes made are perhaps analogous to getting to know oneself. Curatorial Panel members : Gavin Delahunty, Head of exhibitions & displays, TATE Liverpool, Seamus Kealy, Director, The Model, Museum of Contemporary Art, Sligo, Caoimhin Mac Giolla Leith, critic & curator, Declan Long, Course director, Art in the Contemporary world, NCAD, Dublin | www.themodel.ie/exhibitions/all-humans-do [1]

5 - 28 April 2012 | ‘Miscellany’ | Hamilton Gallery, 4 Castle Street, Sligo | Delargy’s 'Shark Series' is loosely based on the theme of ‘Art and Extinction’. The tope or shark motif is a homage to the European natura morta tradition with a nod to the Pieta. The genesis of these paintings lies in a protracted period of time print-making, particularly etching and lithography. These early experiences gave Delargy a new insight into the idea of elaborating these visual sensations but this time using this accumulated knowledge of the etching surface in muted tonal painting. This is the approach applied to the 'Shark series' with a different set of possibilities in painting. According to the critic Robert O'Byrne, 'Delargy's oils display the same raw beauty as his prints'. This exhibition will be travelling to Zacetacus, Mexico later this year. Delargy is a member of Aosdana, The Royal Society of Painter/Printmakers and the Royal Ulster Academy | www.hamiltongallery.ie [1]
