Centred around a painting process, sculpture and installation are incorporated and amalgamated so that painting can become expansive and very often site-specific. The manifestations of these media has ranged from the brutish: squat and broad (made from wood and plaster and house-paint) to the ephemeral and temporal: a painted room that was erased from existence almost as soon as it arrived. This 'painting' process begins from a non-specific point. A mark becomes the intersection of many points which unfolds to produce a visual encounter. The process deals with the elements of painting such as frame, perspective or space, but teases them apart and chases them through their various physical manifestations. | www.thelab.ie [1]

Ronnie Hughes exhibition Zygotic Tendencies, at the Rubicon has been extended until 19 May 2012. Hughes’ concern with the scientific is revisited in ‘Zygotic Tendencies’, which features a number of pieces that have evolved from diverse starting points. For Hughes, the starting point for each visually striking piece begins with something seemingly arbitrary – a geometric or natural pattern, an image, or even protrusions on the weave of a canvas. In Zygotic Tendencies, the assorted, abstract compositions are comprised of lines, dots, shapes, patterns and geometric elements that have all been distorted to produce a final image. | www.rubicongallery.ie/exhibitions/zygotic-tendencies [1]

18 May - 30 June 2012 | Opening 6-8pm on Thurs 17 May 2012 | The LAB in association with Pallas Projects/Studios and Fire Station Artists’ Studios present: Nicki Wynnychuk 'Conversations in': Conversations in: is an ongoing project that considers the relationship between image & object within the dilemma of a contemporary art practice. Conversations in: (Dublin) is the third chapter in the series following on from Conversations in: (Sydney) 2011 & Conversations in: (Melbourne) 2010. Wynnychuk’s practice is based on the recuperation and transformation of found, familiar and banal objects. The intent is to convert, translate and reassemble the material so that it is imbued with a precarious new energy. The conceptual framework continues a sustained investigation into the theorist Herfried Munkler's concept of a post-heroic society.

An artists’ talk, conducted between curator Gavin Murphy and Nicki Wynnychuk, will take place in The LAB at 1pm on Thursday 24th May. The artist will discuss his residency, his work, and his recent experiences in Papua New Guinea. Booking is advised, please check website for more details : www.pallasprojects.org/site/ [1]

Dead Zoo | Özlem Günyol & Mustafa Kunt | 18 May until 27 June 2012 | Preview on 17 May 2012, 6 - 7.30pm | The Return, Goethe-Institut Irland, 37 Merrion Square, Dublin 2. |

Animals have been used in warfare for centuries for many purposes such as communication, espionage, transport or as explosives, detectors or weapons. Like soldiers some of them were decorated or promoted. The title of the exhibition takes its name from the Natural History Museum in Dublin which is commonly known as "The Dead Zoo". Dead Zoo aims to display a different type of classification than that of nature. The animals represented are not scientifically classified but militarily. Özlem Günyol and Mustafa Kunt have been collaborating since 2005. Together they investigate the representation of individual and collective belonging, the meaning of language, symbols, and information conveyed by the media. The idea for Dead Zoo originates from their residency in Dublin in 2011, an exchange project between Temple Bar Gallery & Studios and the Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt/M. The participation of the artists was assisted by Jonathan Carroll. Supported by the Friends and Patrons of the Goethe-Institut Irland. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/dub/kue/en9263179v.htm [1]

17 May - 16 June | Opening Thurs 17 May, 7 - 9 pm : The Fold (Issue 7) will be launched in the gallery the same night. Following on from a successful launch of Joyce in the City: Dubliners at Oonagh Young Gallery with a live performance by Amanda Coogan called ‘Molly Blooms’ on April 1st, we are pleased to present the video piece ‘Everness’ by Alejandro Cesarco (Uruguay) and 3 works on paper by Vittorio Santoro (Switzerland) in this exhibition Ever/Until. The works presented in Ever/Until relate directly to time and memory. Narrative ambiguities are particular to both Cesarco and Santoro, each citing literary sources, amongst other artistic arenas, as inspiration for much of their work. Whether directly referenced or obliquely observed, the appropriation of titles, sentences or whole scenes are sometimes re-contextualised and therefore reevaluated. Curated by Christa-Maria Lerm Hays and Oonagh Young. | www.oonaghyoung.com [1]

Iwona works in mixed media encaustic, where she combines the millennia old technique of painting with wax and other drawing mediums such as charcoal, pencil and pastels. She possesses a distinctive figure drawing style, in which she accentuates the movement of the body and muscle tone. The use of wax provides the paintings with a strong and robust appearance. The encaustic medium is very well suited for portraying movement and action in painting. This becomes apparent when the brush interacts with the painting surface, occurring at a much quicker rate than other mediums, due to the rapid setting of wax. | www.thedoorwaygallery.com [1]

She possesses a distinctive figure drawing style, in which she accentuates the movement of the body and muscle tone. The use of wax provides the paintings with a strong and robust appearance. The encaustic medium is very well suited for portraying movement and action in painting. This becomes apparent when the brush interacts with the painting surface, occurring at a much quicker rate than other mediums, due to the rapid setting of wax. | www.thedoorwaygallery.com

26th April - 14th June | 29 Molesworth Street, Dublin 2, Ireland | 'Beyond the House of Carmen' refers to a house above the village of Casarabonela in Andalusia, north of Malaga in Spain. Lawlor was introduced here by the painter Michael Cullen and a generation before William Crozier painted nearby at Alhuaran in the 1960’s. There has always been a touch of the romantic sublime attached to Lawlor’s diverse range of landscapes. These paintings are intimate, poetic, intensely worked and they embrace the history of European landscape painting. As in the landscapes, bright light has the effect of placing Lawlor's subjects in a series of caught moments. These paintings push Lawlor's restlessly searching art into new country where his intimate, un-showy ability as a painter are everywhere to be seen.
11-13 May 2012 | As part of PLAY no. 6, Moxie Studios will be hosting an exhibition of work by Sardinian artist Gianluca Floris. Currently based in London, Floris's practice involves using mixed media to create spontaneous and vibrant pieces which reflect his enthusiastic and immediate approach to making art. Through his paintings and textiles, we see his distinguished style of fragmented-process painting and drawing together, creating vivid colored works. An innocent representation of a figure or object takes on an entirely new meaning resulting in works that are sometimes ironic, sometimes melancholy, and always infused with a pop art inspired from a graphic sensibility. This exhibition has been organised by Sara Ghia as part of Moxie's internship programme. There will be a reception on Saturday 12th or May at 8pm prior to PLAY, Moxie Studios' monthly music and visual art event, which will begin at 9pm | www.mox.ie [1]

10 May - 30 July 2012 | 10 May 6.30-8.30pm | 'Stories from the City, Stories from the Sea' | Art at The Ivy House is delighted to present the first Dublin solo exhibition of Donegal based artist Damien McGinley. Several of the works to feature in this show were recently exhibited in Damien’s solo show 'Eurekastraat' in Antwerp which received very positive reviews. Damien’s mixed media paintings are strongly informed by a sense of place, relating to rural and more often urban environments. In a response to external and internal landscapes, over the last number of years he has been examining how the linear structure can enhance the composition of these landscapes. Whereas these compositions were deliberately rigid and regimented, he is now beginning to approach his work seeking a dissolution of boundaries | www.theivyhouse.ie [1]

It relies on principles employed both in medical science and musical practice; when two frequencies at a certain ratio are played into the ear, additional vibrations in the inner ear will produce a third frequency.
15th May- June | 'Shoal' - a participatory art project by Emily Robyn Archer with a shoal of fish made from tin cans in reaction to overfishing. The statistics are grim: 3/4 of the world's fish stocks are being harvested faster than they can reproduce. 90% of all large predatory fish - including tuna, sharks, swordfish and cod – are gone. Scientists predict that if current trends continue, world fisheries could collapse entirely by 2050. Luckily we can change this with better fishing practices and policy, but the first step is raising awareness of the problem. In response to the idea that we are literally eating the oceans dry, it was decided to create a shoal of tin-can-fish to offset the extinction of real fish in the sea | www.facebook.com/pages/Shoal/224060344356492?ref=ts [1] | www.emilyrobynarcher.com [2] |

Each year we programme a set of exhibitions, films, workshops and events to explore a particular theme. This year we are looking at artists who utilise both virtual and real spaces to create their work, with a focus on: -Collective Intelligence – Exploring how internet connectivity has enabled us to draw information, skills and knowledge from many people across the globe. -Immersive Technology – Blurring the line between the physical and digital world Generative Art - Using computer systems, software, algorithms and quantified data to create or inform work. -Open Source Technology – Utilising freely available and collaborative processes, software and intelligence to create or manipulate works. Alongside the three exhibitions we are also hosting fun workshops for young people in making useful objects with recyclable materials and skills based workshops in soldering for artists or young makers who want to expand their skills. The Festival will close with two very exciting live performances from Jacob Kirkegaard and The Spatial Music Collective in Gallery 1, which promise to be two events that are not to be missed | www.ruared.ie/glitch_2012.html for associated events [1]

'Riding Pillion with Ballard' sees Mayo-based sculptor Tim Morris present quasi-science fictional visual representations of future roadside memorials dedicated to the memories of road traffic accidents. There are 26 unique works in the series, one for each of the 26 counties. Each one is a futuristic imagining of a roadside memorial as Morris believes they may have been envisioned by the writer J.G. Ballard (1930-2009) on a fictive motorcycle journey in which he rides as a pillion passenger on Ballard’s motorbike. The 'Memorials' are numbered according to the system used on the registration plates of motorised road vehicles nationwide. | www.taylorgalleries.ie [1] |

Broadcast Gallery at DIT Portland Row is pleased to announce the first Irish exhibition and performance of the work of London based artist Mary Hurrell. Key Blank will open on Thursday 3rd of May at 6:00pm with a performance and installation choreographed by Mary Hurrell. The piece will be a live composition of movement, objects and sound at Broadcast Gallery. Working to a silent score of words, the piece explores the reading of objects and space through the body, and more specifically touch. The installation uses objects which seal off one or more of the senses in their reading, blank objects cut or shaped through the performer/viewer’s experiencing of them. The installation and performance is part of an ongoing enquiry into forms of non-verbal language .

29th April – 13th May 2012 | All over Dublin

If you are commuting in the Greater Dublin Area during the first two weeks of May the public art project Travelogue will be very hard to miss. In Travelogue, artist Theresa Nanigian has created an intimate portrait of the lives of those who work and travel on the public transport network. Every DART and Luas carriage, every second bus, every Luas stop, along with all the major train stations, commuter trains, bus stops and many other public display sites will “exhibit” the personal stories of Dubliners who use or work on our capital’s public transport system. Travelogue is quite simply a celebration of the wit and humanity of the people of Dublin as they travel around the capital city.

The website - www.travelogue.ie [1] features the complete set of Travelogue stories and mind maps filled with interesting data and statistics about public transport. Travelogue is a Per Cent for Art project commissioned by the National Transport Authority, Dublin City Council, Fingal County Council, South Dublin County Council and Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council.

His work for this exhibition is site specific making use of the gallery space and its architectural features. Duncan’s work deals with the overlap between the sciences and art. Central to his practice are geometry, form and material, having studied engineering before moving toward the visual arts this multi-faceted approach is something Duncan uses to his advantage to create a well balanced show. It is not only the surrounding environment that will have an effect on this work but also the viewer, who is invited to have a physical encounter with the work | www.monstertruck.ie/blog/?page_id=2

29th April 2012 | 10.30pm - 2.30am | 'Prelude to Nothing' is a live event curated by David Fagan, to mark the final hours before the transmission of analogue satellite television channels to Europe ceases. The analogue satellite system is one which connected the planet with real-time audio and video. As time and technology has moved on, analogue satellite television has spent years in a limbo of sorts; a slow atrophic demise with an indefinite endpoint. Finally at 2am, at the end of our event, we will watch it slip away. The evening will feature works by Kevin Atherton, Cormac Browne, Ruth Clinton, Brian Conniffe, Kevin A. Freeney, Kevin Kirwan, Andreas Kindler von Knobloch, Niamh Moriarty, Áine Stapleton, Suzanne Walsh, Tom Watt and Lee Welch with text by Patrica Garcia and Tracy Hanna. Due to capacity, spaces are limited, please RSVP to E:preludetonothing@gmail.com

The work in this exhibition comprises of dry point line drawings, derived from Gallagher's archive of sketchbooks, images that particularly resonated with the artist, some drawn here in Ireland, others in places from ‘Prague to Peru’ | www.gerhardtgallagher.com [1]

28 April 2012 | As part of our current exhibition 'A MacGuffin and Some Other Things', Project Arts Centre presents 'Motility', a new performance work by Alice Rekab (performed by the artist Paul Maguire). Expanding on the themes in her film-work (currently on display in the gallery) this performance merges original material by the artist with script and choreographed movements from self-help and martial-arts demonstration videos. The performers also stage a live interaction with a number of sculptural objects which appear in various forms in the exhibition. This event offers a unique chance to encounter performance, sculptural objects, script and action. This will take place in the gallery on Saturday 28 April, at the following times- 1.30pm – 1.50pm | 2.30pm – 2.50pm | 3.30pm – 3.50pm | All are welcome to join us for this one-off event, however please note that places are limited due to restricted capacity and as we are not taking bookings, places are allocated on a first-come first-served basis | www.projectartscentre.ie [1]

25th Apr - 30th Apr | Opening Wednesday 25 April 6 – 8pm | Artist talk with Davey Moor on Monday 30th April at 6pm | Aoibheann Greenan’s ‘Tahiti Syndrome’ takes its title from the 20th century term that once described the desire amongst societal leaders for a remote or idyllic environment into which they could escape from the pressures of modern life. Greenan reinterprets this utopian idea, applying it within the context of everyday ritualistic activities such as exercise or recreational drug-use. Drawing on Western Exoticism, the show loosely adopts the framework of a tourist trail. Absurd devises are employed allowing for viewing to occur at various vantage points. The environment allows for the viewer to become playfully initiated into the role of the shaman for whom transcendence is achieved with the use of profane materials, ritual, and mind-altering plants | www.thejoinery.org [1]
