CCA is pleased to announce an upcoming solo exhibition by Sarah Pierce, No Title, opening on 22 July. The exhibition is related to Pierce’s long-term project with CCA which hones in on dementia, on the one hand as a marked disorder, but with a potential to reorder and restructure what we consider to be – and how we construct concepts of – personal narrative and subjecthood.

The exhibition No Title will be launched alongside the artist book by the same name, which has been produced as part of the project and features contributions from Claire Potter, Mason Leaver-Yap, Jacob Wren, Karl Holmqvist, and TJ Clark.

August Craft Month 2017, Northern Ireland

August Craft Month is the largest annual celebration of contemporary craft and the applied arts in Northern Ireland. Co-ordinated by the team at Craft Northern Ireland, the sector leading body for the promotion and development of the design-led contemporary craft industry in NI, and with support from the Arts Council of Northern Ireland, 2017 marks our 11th year of August Craft Month.

We have invited galleries, museums, local councils, craft organisations, arts centres, universities, heritage organisations and individual makers to join us and develop a rich programme of over 200 events and activities taking place this August all across the region.

August Craft Month is an opportunity for all of us to support local designer-makers and promote their work. It’s a wonderful oppertunity for the public to experience, participate in and learn more about contemporary craft through workshops, exhibitions, demonstrations, talks and much, much more.

Group Pop Up Exhibition at Ballycastle, Co. Antrim

A pop up exhibition featuring a collection of work by Irish artists.

The exhibition features a wide range of works from artists and craft makers including jewellery by Robert Spotten, sculptures by Jo Hatty, animal ceramic sculptures by Sharon Regan, knitwear from designer Edel McBride and ceramics by Cula Ceramics – Patricia Millar, Malcom Murchison, Alan McCluney.

Further original works by artists Harry McMahon, Barry Williamson, Ashley Coulter, Les Sharpe, Robert Spotten, Joan Gibson and Nadia Kaczmarczuk.

Other artists include glass artist Catherine Keenan, photography by Conor Edgell, landscapes by Ossie Bruce, felted works of art by Linda Lewis, embroidered jewellery by Janice Gilmore and willow sculptures by Louise McLean complete the collection.

The Pop up gallery opening hours are 9.30am to 6pm, Monday to Saturday and 1pm to 6pm on Sundays. The gallery is situated in Ballycastle town centre, 44 Ann street, with an easy access to car parking.

The Pursuit of Happiness | Eddie Rafferty at F.E. McWilliam Gallery, Co. Down

The Pursuit of Happiness, a stunning new exhibition by local artist Eddie Rafferty opens to the public on Saturday 17 June. Featuring prints, drawings, paintings and collages the exhibition depicts the people and places that Eddie has encountered at home and abroad, particularly in South Africa where he worked as an artist in residence.

Some of the earliest works in this exhibition are a series of colour lithographs depicting nostalgic subjects including Banbridge’s long demolished Art Deco cinema and Gilford Pigeon Club. These local scenes are depicted in a playful folk-art aesthetic that is in stark contrast to the fine draughtsmanship seen in later etchings, particularly the series of large in heads of young men, made from life in South Africa.

Basic Communities / Soft People | Philipp Kremer at CCA, Derry

CCA is proud to present a solo exhibition by Berlin-based artist Philipp Kremer – his first major exhibition in Ireland / UK. Basic Communities / Soft People features two recent series of paintings that depict groups of human figures, alternating between convivial scenes of reading and dancing (Basic Communities) and scenes that suggest people in a more violent and eruptive state of relationship (Soft People).

The idealism described in Kremer’s Basic Communities series is matched with a dense, compositional airlessness, painted with colours that offset the tonalities of skin, clothing and background environment. The works in the Soft People series are more capacious in their approach, registering the horror of their subject matter through light and gestural marks that suggest the human body in a cruel state of subjection. Across the two series, Kremer’s works evoke questions of representational ethics, both in art’s address of human suffering and in the promise of social togetherness.

The Complex Seer | Emily McFarland at CCA, Derry

Emily McFarland’s presentation at CCA is titled after an essay by Martin Walsh that explores the relationship between film and German playwright Bertolt Brecht’s theories and works. The Complex Seer features a video installation that draws upon footage from a range of films including the cult movie Zabriskie Point, the fiction/documentary Ice, and La Chinoise, one of French-Swiss New Wave director Jean-Luc Goddard’s most political works. These films were produced in the late 1960s and early 1970s at a time when countercultural activity dominated the media and political landscape. In different ways they portray groups of radical students and young people who conspire to affect the upheaval of mainstream society. The works in The Complex Seer use this imagery as a way to recode the cinematic conventions of depicting revolutionary action and investigate the spaces in which these actions are collectively planned and formalised.

The installation makes reference to avant-garde architectural spaces by incorporating a digital print that depicts details in artist, designer, and architect El Lissitzky’s Cabinet of Abstraction (1927-28), a changeable room/artwork designed to house abstract art within a museum. Modular flat-pack shelving contains a cassette player and collection of hand made tapes with recordings of live concerts by the American countercultural rock band The Grateful Dead, sourced by the artist from the torrent site Pirate Bay. Originally collected by fan, ‘taper’, and later official Grateful Dead archivist Dick Latvala, the cassettes included in The Complex Seer draws parallels between the subcultural Grateful Dead analogue ‘taper’ bootlegging community and the activity of ‘plugging-in’ to contemporary collective online file sharing networks.

Other Scenes | Brigitte Zieger at Void

Void is proud to present the work of German Paris-based artist Brigitte Zieger. Curated by Gregory McCartney, ‘Other Scenes’ explores virtual and spatial 3D images which relate to history and the integration of displacements between image, sculpture and space.

Zieger’s work relates to her interpretation of political and historical contexts and the images which emerge from them. She employs a diverse range of mediums, from drawing and cut-outs to video, sculpture and wallpaper. At the heart of Zieger’s work is the ability to draw the viewer in through its appealing aesthetic, only to be confronted by the subtle signs of violence which exist just beneath the surface: destruction, alienation, and oppression.

This exhibition explores the space which is represented and produces forms which are both typically digital and seemingly decaying, thus talking simultaneously of the future and of ruins, of a past perishing in a fragmented digital memory and a world in the period of dematerialisation. Zieger is motivated by this materialisation and dematerialisation, by the possibility of offering he viewer the opportunity to find him/herself physically included in this formal proposition, that one can approach as much on the poetic and sensorial, even aesthetic level, as on the conceptual level.

Millennium Court Arts Centre is delighted to present two exhibitions showcasing the development of work by artists, students and practitioners from the local area. In Gallery 1 and Gallery 2 is the exhibition CHRYSALIS, comprised of work from students from Southern Regional College (SRC). Sharing Gallery 2 is Portadown Visual Arts Society’s 15th Annual Summer Exhibition.

CHRYSALIS (Gallery 1 & 2) is a show-case of work from students completing their studies at Southern Regional College’s Lurgan Campus. The exhibition takes in work by students from the BA (Hons) Creative Imaging Degree course, the National Diploma In Graphic Design and the HND Photography Course. This work will be an eclectic mix of photography, graphic design, media and fine art presented through a range of medium such as photography, video, print, painting, drawing, artist books, sculpture and installations. Themes vary throughout from expressions of individual ideas and concepts to the development and showcasing of a professional or commercial practice.

In Gallery 2 Portadown Visual Arts Society (PVAS) will hold their 15th Annual Summer Exhibition.
PVAS are a local art group who are major stakeholders in the Arts Centre. This exhibition creates another step in providing artistic opportunities for the members in a professional setting. The work, which draws great interest from the local area, will continue to develop ties between MCAC and local practicing artists.

Convergence | Noel Connor and David Gepp at the Verbal Arts Centre, Derry

The artist and poet Noel Connor and the renowned photographer David Gepp, were both born and brought up in Belfast, Noel in Andersonstown, David in Finaghy. Less than a mile apart, the two areas are connected by Finaghy Road North, an arterial route which crosses over and under the main Belfast/Dublin train line and the North/South M1 motorway. Yet throughout their childhoods and teenage years, they would rarely if ever have travelled the length of this road, which joined or separated two of the Protestant and Catholic communities of the city.

A chance meeting three years ago has led to a shared love and fascination for a section of Donegal coastline where David has settled and Noel spends part of each year working. This show represents only a small portion of the work they have derived from their creative response and contemplative scrutiny of this extraordinary area.

Working separately and arriving from very different directions, technically and creatively, their concerns converge to produce remarkable currents and cross currents. This contrast and diversity only enriches and feeds their shared commitment to the pursuit of work that is at once rooted in both the commonplace and the revelatory, the localised and the universal.

A Natural End | Maurice Orr at the Mid-Antrim Museum at The Braid

A Natural End is a collection of monotype prints inspired by the weathered beauty of ageing fishing boats. Local artist Maurice Orr has produced this series in response to the work of maritime artist Kenneth Shoesmith (1890-1939). The prints will be displayed alongside Art of the Liner, a travelling exhibition of Shoesmith’s artwork from National Museums Northern Ireland.

Maurice Orr delights in looking closely at the things other people might not notice. While Shoesmith’s paintings depict the glorious newness of a vessel at sea, Orr’s prints take inspiration from the rusting hulls of a more modest seafaring past, revealing beauty in the colours and patterns of rust and peeling layers of paint.

In the science fiction novel “We,” by Yevgeny Zamyatin there is occasional reference to a “Two-Hundred-Year War.” The details of the catalysing epoch are never described fully. The reader is left to speculate upon the crisis and the conditions that brought it about. This speculation, is one of the central concerns in this body of work. With any occurrence largely read by digital means, how is the historical timeline composed and events concatenated? How does this lens affect reading, and position an “event” relative to any other moment, with only diffuse edges separating document and fiction in this arena?

The framework put in place to create this work, is a model of how images and data are found and referenced, revealing the flaws, the haphazard nature of search, and the evident human curation, not only of the archive, but the mechanics and structure of how we interact with any archive and its data.

Half Light is the first exhibition by award-winning photographer, Ellie Davies, in Ireland. Based in Southern England, Davies has been working in UK forests since 2007, making work which explores the complex interrelationship between the landscape and the individual. The forest becomes Ellie’s studio, reflecting her personal relationship with the forest and a meditation on universal themes relating to the human psyche and woodland. For this exhibition, our Curator, Desima, has selected works from Ellie’s body of photographic work —The Gloaming (2011), Between the Trees (2014), and Stars (2014).

From his abstract sculptural forms to his photo-graphic works responding to landscape and location, Hill is concerned with formal questions of colour, texture and volume and philosophical issues about the nature of art, and the role of the artist and the viewer. Despite the diversity of media and subject matter, there is a strong shared conceptual and aesthetic approach that unites these works into a consistent oeuvre.
