A series of contemporary paintings by Donegal/Derry artist Sinéad Smyth. A collection of work including portraits based on individuals who have worked towards change and transformation (1916-2016). Individuals with strong vision and beliefs who influenced the cultural and political development of the island of Ireland at both local and national levels.

Other works include other portraits and abstract paintings based on ideas of perception and empathy relating to displacement, change and transformation affecting personal ego and global developments.

‘In my father’s house there are many rooms’ an exhibition by Michelle Boyle at Townhall Cavan Arts Space.

Michelle Boyle is a visual artist based in Garryross, Virginia where she works between her studio beside the family home and the Blackchurch studios in Dublin. Boyle works in both oil and watercolours and her exhibition ‘In my father’s house there are many rooms’ is her first solo show in Cavan. This show forms the basis of a developing body of work that draws on issues around love and loss. The work touches on things remembered and re-imagined from the artist’s childhood as well as more recent themes that arose during a Residency in India earlier this year where her natural father is from.

Alongside the personal works she will be showing an ongoing series of small paintings on wood called ‘Incidental Icons’. These are painted from newspaper images of anonymous people caught up in war or conflict. It is the artists attempt to spend time with, and consider, these people whose nameless faces pass through our lives relentlessly every-day.

An exhibition of portraits by Mike Stone taking pace at the Johnston Centre Library, Cavan.

This exhibition is a unique collection of Portraits of Traveller men, women and children. It is part of the work of the Extern Travller Network raising awareness on Mental Health in the Travller Community.

Ita Madden, co-ordinator of the Extern Traveller Network works with the community. Ita speaking about the exhibition says ” this is an important exhibition because the Traveller Community allowed Mike Stone to capture them in their homes, with their families and experience the reality of their lives. I am very grateful to the families who gave us that access. I really hope that people come along to see this work. It was a great pleasure for me to work with Mike Stone on this exhibition and I have for many years worked to build confidence with members of the Traveller Community and I am grateful for their enthusiasm for this work.”

Loose Ends is a new commission by Willie Doherty exploring how people, events and places associated with the 1916 Easter Rising are remembered and imagined today. The Easter Rising and the subsequent partition of Ireland have had an obvious influence on Willie Doherty’s life and work.

The political charged terrain of Derry City is a central and recurring theme of his work, as is the landscape of neighboring County Donegal. The work builds on Doherty’s interest in the relationship between landscape and memory. The project explores if a residual response to these events continues to be played out and how the voices and actions of one generation resonate in the unconscious of another.

Aground | Centenary Programme Exhibition Event, Donegal

Aground is a visual arts exhibition and event taking place in Moville on September 16th and 17th as part of the Donegal 2016: Cultural Expression programme. The artworks on show include sculpture, photographs, drawings and writings. Themes and subjects range from Erskine Childers’ propaganda press and marine warfare, to ‘native’ flora and plants, narratives of map-making and a sculptural ‘Ladder’.

Aground has been produced by LOCI Artists’ Group, formed in 2014 by five women working in visual art, research and writing. Our core shared interests are notions of belonging and the complex relationships between place and identity.

Friday: Aground Arts Workshop with LOCI artists and members of the Sea Scout troop(name) in Moville. The artwork produced by the young people will be displayed in the exhibition on Saturday 17 September.
Saturday 11.00am Aground exhibition open until 5pm. Artists will be available to give a tour/talk throughout the day. Admission free and all welcome.
Saturday 3.00pm Aground Open discussion with the artists Bryonie Reid, Rachel Glynn, Siun Hanrahan, Amanda McKittrick, Mhairi Sutherland and invited speaker Martin Lynch, local historian and cultural guide. Admission free and all are welcome.

‘Of land and sea’ is a solo exhibition by Inishowen artist Sinead Smyth. Artlink are pleased to announce that they will be hosting their second annual Members’ Show at the Saldanha Suite at Fort Dunree. This year’s exhibition by curator, researcher and 126 Board Member Lucy Elvis, has “Insiders and Outsiders” as its theme.

Outsiders can be lovers of nature, those who are drawn to the wilds, but equally those who place themselves or are placed at the fringes. Resistant to the prevailing forces of society the outsider is romanticised, excluded and pitted inevitably against those on the inside. Insiders and outsiders are often contrasted as urban as opposed to rural, as convention against non-conformism, as those that belong and those on the fringes.

Artlink membership has a national reach. This year’s exhibition has a diverse range of submissions that explores the theme of insiders and outsiders in a variety of contexts and mediums.

The Higher Bridges Gallery present ‘Pig Shop’ by Simon Fennessy Corcoran. Corcoran’s practice look’s at an idea that animals have lost their naturalistic value in the eyes of society, particularly in the “developed world” outside our sphere of experience there are those who retain this reverence and value we’ve lost.
Corcoran took as a starting point his own ingrained fascination with anatomy and the physical materials of nature, due to his own genetic anomaly which as a child fascinated him. A three year project around these issues emerged and formed into an internal discussion about the apparent flippant nature of our shifting viewpoints of “popular” materials.

Has Buncrana been forgotten in these ten years?
What were the experiences of the people of Buncrana then and now?

Californian artist, Jim Ricks, would like to hear your stories. He has made a commemorative flag at the Fab Lab in Derry and will hoist it for the day to mark this occasion. Ricks extends a warm welcome to the citizens of Buncrana to attend the flag lowering ceremony on Wednesday 18th May at the Town Council at 6pm. We will retire to The Cottage Bar for refreshments and discussion afterwards. This could be a great opportunity to reminisce, get something of your chest, mend fences, relate your experience, or observe a moment of silence.

There will be souvenir t shirts given away as part of the event.

Jim understands he is an outsider to this place and as such he uniquely represents no set interest. Instead, it is part of his research into the movements of capitalism and the real effects of globalisation. He wishes to humbly approach the people of Buncrana in solidarity and with a desire to hear your stories and learn.
