An exhibition of the work of Northern Irish - Born painter William McKeown, who until his death last year painted the sky of his adopted city of Edinburgh and his native County Tyrone. McKeown was a great admirer of Inverleith House where this spring, a collection of his most recent paintings will be exhibited for the first time. We are deeply grateful to the artist's estate and to the Kerlin Gallery, Dublin for their support in making this exhibition possible. www.rbge.org.uk/the-gardens/edinburgh/inverleith-house/current-exhibitions [1]

12 - 30 May 2012 | Proximal Distance brings together artists and researchers to explore perceptions of distance; from engagement with one’s immediate surroundings to the collapsing of space made possible by media and technology. Recent popular movements such as the Arab Spring and Occupy have demonstrated the dynamic relationship that exists between physical and virtual interaction on a large scale. Out of our personal experiences maintaining regular long distance relationships, we are interested in how new forms of communication influence an individual’s interactions, sense of community and cultural identity. Participating artists: Louise Manifold, Trey Burns and Andy Rauchut. Proximal Distances is curated by Caitlin Gianniny and Cathy Mooses. Louise Manifold is generously funded by Culture Ireland and Galway County Council | www.proximaldistance.tumblr.com [1]

What he delivers is a fictional developing city, housing mysterious forms cloaked with impasto paint, reminiscent of Christo’s wrapped buildings.
Title: Performance by Atsushi Kaga and Louise Ward at Location One, NY |
Dates: 3rd May 2012, 7pm.

'Death, Void and sometimes my Mother' is a new live collaborative performance by artists Atsushi Kaga and Louise Ward. It will take place at 7pm on May 3rd, at Location One. The show combines a number of media; the process of art-making itself is combined with concerns on the personal, the social and the cultural in relation to the everyday. The audience will be immersed in stories, music, and visual art. Questions about how we (individuals and communities) navigate and make sense of our surroundings will arise throughout the performance. The performance will be slightly mundane, gently humorous and mildly tragic. Kaga creates an imaginative conversation between Michael Jackson, Giorgio Morandi and his mother, Kasuko, who are represented by three large skulls. Ward makes atmospheric sounds and colour fields with lights, video and sculpture that have links to the body and cut across time and cultural boundaries. www.location1.org

26 April - 6 May | Künstlerhaus Bethanien GmbH, Berlin | BERLIN.STATUS (1) investigates the big-city phenomenon of art, starting out from the observation that Berlin today is "an art city with no consensus". The exhibition presents artists who doubt in the necessity for large-scale mobilisation and are therefore working intellectually and aesthetically to supplement or sharpen their own very personal profile. Although they have definitely moved the focus of their lives to Berlin permanently, it is not "the Berlinesque" here that provides fertile ground for the extraordinary, but the individual ability shown by every outstanding artist. The main conceptual interest of the exhibition curators is in the doubt inherent in almost all current tendencies: "Somewhere, there is always 'one small village in Gaul'. We search for that and reveal nuances of change by distancing, i.e. the signals prior to radical change, not trends. We ignore the opposition of 'newcomers' and 'established artists' because the market is greedy; in the end it will turn everything into mincemeat, but now and then we ought to consider a more innovative dish." | www.bethanien.de [1] | www.llewellyn.ie

7 -10.30pm on Thursday 12th of April, 2012 | 15 Cr/ Creu dels Molers, Poble Sec, Barcelona |' The Ouroboros Experiment ' | An installation by Irish artist Emily Robyn Archer, exploring creativity and the everyday. The ouroboros is an ancient symbol depicting a dragon eating its own tail. The name originates from within Greek language; οὐρά (oura) meaning "tail" and βόρος (boros) meaning "eating", thus "he who eats the tail". The artist experiments with her living and studio space, traversing ways in which our creativity plays off our everyday life, sometimes an awkward obstacle we have to manoeuvre, but always holding the allure of unique self expression and the opportunity to create and sustain energy from within. The installation celebrates a new creative space in the Poble Sec locality. To invite the involvement of the community the artist has been working with participants making miniature origami dragons with the address of installation attached and leaving them in public areas for people to find and follow, discovering the Ouroboros Experiment for themselves | www.emilyrobynarcher.com [1]

March 15 to May 27 2012 | Central to the Les concordances du temps exhibit is a large-scale, video installation conceived as an exploration of the relationship between the practices of two contemporary artists: photographer Josée Pedneault and multidisciplinary artist Molly O’Dwyer. Having independently filmed the Snæfellsnes volcano on the same night – from opposite sides of Reykyavik – the artists decided to combine their films and project them one over the other, thus creating a temporal exploration of the space as the sunlight gradually changes. This piece, created while the artists were in residence together in Iceland in August 2011, presents contrasting views that mesh into a coherent amalgam of their respective aesthetics. The exhibition will also include individual works from both artists; shown for the first time together, they reveal the poetic quality inherent in the artists’ work. | www.mollyodwyer.com [1]

March 17th - May 5th 2012 | Opening 5pm March 17 | Galeria Isabel Hurley presents a solo project by Aideen Barry entitled 'Nervous Notions and Menageries'. The work featured in this show reflects on the artist's conversation around anxiety in the contemporary subconscious. Barry draws our attention to the cracks in the veneer of normal, questioning our perception of the real while contrasting it with the horror of our most feared. Barry's work draws on themes of the Gothic while referencing the over arching conversation of collapse and breakdown in our societies. The artist considers economic collapse both in Spain and in Ireland looking at the domestic as a contested space in the throws of hysteria and in a state of meltdown | www.isabelhurley.com [1]
