12th May - 8th June 2012 | This work marks the final stage of a project begun in 2008 and supported by the Create, Phase I - Artist in the Community Scheme. The artist’s decision to work with the ancient Greek myth of Demeter and Persephone as the starting point for this cycle of images, came from a need to find distance and preserve anonymity, to offer a cohesion, or potential for meaning in events that so often seem to have none. Visually the artist’s work often combines elements of ‘tableaux vivant’ and ‘documentary’ photography. While she enjoy using the ‘constructed’ or ‘performative’, she is aware of the power of photography as a perceived language of ‘hard fact’. Cleary enjoys working in the grey areas between, which to her is like memory, sometimes factual, at other times fantastical. | www.martinacleary.com [1]

I try to capture how it is to be in that moment and place. I am obsessed with colour and light, in particular the juxtaposition of colours, how colours affect and influence one another. I use the landscape around me to explore this, looking to colourful tree blossom, twilight skies, and dark storms with light breaking through. I look through the landscape, simplifying the image, exploring the negative space, searching for what I can use in my painting. I often lean towards abstraction, but try to hold on to the figurative elements". | www.mullangallery.com [1]

Centred around a painting process, sculpture and installation are incorporated and amalgamated so that painting can become expansive and very often site-specific. The manifestations of these media has ranged from the brutish: squat and broad (made from wood and plaster and house-paint) to the ephemeral and temporal: a painted room that was erased from existence almost as soon as it arrived. This 'painting' process begins from a non-specific point. A mark becomes the intersection of many points which unfolds to produce a visual encounter. The process deals with the elements of painting such as frame, perspective or space, but teases them apart and chases them through their various physical manifestations. | www.thelab.ie [1]

Her work is multifaceted, embracing not only various types of performance but also filmmaking and organising experimental music events. In this event, she will be bringing these three strands of her practice back home, giving Galway audiences a rare, concentrated one-night blast of the intensity that has made her a force to be reckoned with in Cork. Judas Steer will feature Langan as performer, filmmaker and curator. Her solo performance project, Wölflinge, uses flesh, fluid and self-built instruments to envelop audiences in an aura of dark intimacy. In opening herself emotionally, she creates warm yet discomforting rituals that at once embrace the viewers and remain resolutely private. Not only will Langan be performing, but she will also present an exhibition of recreations, relics and leavings of past performances. | www.vickylangan.com [1]

Its faculty included many of the most important abstract artists of the day.

The emigration of many Bauhäusler, as staff and students alike termed themselves, from Germany helped disperse its ideas around the world, where they were often equated (not always correctly) with principled opposition to Naziism. This lecture will focus on new themes in Bauhaus scholarship, including the increasing recognition being accorded the work of the women who taught and studied there. It will also refer to the exhibition with the same title which is currently on show at London's Barbican. | Further Information: T: 01 6611155 | E:arts@dublin.goethe.org

Ronnie Hughes exhibition Zygotic Tendencies, at the Rubicon has been extended until 19 May 2012. Hughes’ concern with the scientific is revisited in ‘Zygotic Tendencies’, which features a number of pieces that have evolved from diverse starting points. For Hughes, the starting point for each visually striking piece begins with something seemingly arbitrary – a geometric or natural pattern, an image, or even protrusions on the weave of a canvas. In Zygotic Tendencies, the assorted, abstract compositions are comprised of lines, dots, shapes, patterns and geometric elements that have all been distorted to produce a final image. | www.rubicongallery.ie/exhibitions/zygotic-tendencies [1]

Conversations in: (Dublin) is the third chapter in the series following on from Conversations in: (Sydney) 2011 & Conversations in: (Melbourne) 2010. Wynnychuk’s practice is based on the recuperation and transformation of found, familiar and banal objects. The intent is to convert, translate and reassemble the material so that it is imbued with a precarious new energy. The conceptual framework continues a sustained investigation into the theorist Herfried Munkler's concept of a post-heroic society.

An artists’ talk, conducted between curator Gavin Murphy and Nicki Wynnychuk, will take place in The LAB at 1pm on Thursday 24th May. The artist will discuss his residency, his work, and his recent experiences in Papua New Guinea. Booking is advised, please check website for more details : www.pallasprojects.org/site/ [1]

Animals have been used in warfare for centuries for many purposes such as communication, espionage, transport or as explosives, detectors or weapons. Like soldiers some of them were decorated or promoted. The title of the exhibition takes its name from the Natural History Museum in Dublin which is commonly known as "The Dead Zoo". Dead Zoo aims to display a different type of classification than that of nature. The animals represented are not scientifically classified but militarily. Özlem Günyol and Mustafa Kunt have been collaborating since 2005. Together they investigate the representation of individual and collective belonging, the meaning of language, symbols, and information conveyed by the media. The idea for Dead Zoo originates from their residency in Dublin in 2011, an exchange project between Temple Bar Gallery & Studios and the Culture Department of the City of Frankfurt/M. The participation of the artists was assisted by Jonathan Carroll. Supported by the Friends and Patrons of the Goethe-Institut Irland. www.goethe.de/ins/ie/dub/kue/en9263179v.htm [1]

Artist and manager of Void Gallery in Derry, Maoliosa Boyle, represented Void on the selection panel for the British Pavilion at the Venice Biennale 2013. Jeremy Deller has been selected for the 55th Biennale. He will present a solo exhibition in the British Pavilion, which will run from June to November 2013. Maoliosa Boyle said: It was an honor to be part of the panel and represent Void. Jeremy Deller is a wonderful artist who creates socially engaging work in a real sense, for the public, involving the public. Jeremy exhibited at Void in 2010 and spent time in Derry in the lead up to his exhibition; his presence at the Biennale is therefore particularly significant. The Venice Biennale is one of the most prestigious art exhibitions in the world; I’m incredibly excited at the prospect of what Jeremy will create for the pavilion in 2013. www.derryvoid.com/exhibitions/2010/Jeremy-Deller/index.htm [1]

Jimmy Deenihan TD, Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, has announced the introduction of a new philanthropic initiative – on a pilot basis – for arts and culture organisations. The initiative – the Philanthropy Leverage Initiative – is designed to encourage philanthropic sponsorship and endowment funding of the arts from private sources. The initiative, established with funding of €230,000 for 2012, will be managed by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht.

The Philanthropy Leverage Initiative will provide an incentive to arts organisations to proactively seek new and multi-annual relationships with sponsors which deliver private sector financial support, thereby increasing overall funding available to the arts. It will be available across projects of varying scale, geography and art forms.

It is envisaged that this funding will unlock new private sector funding of 2.5 times the State allocation of €230,000 generating total additional funding of €805,000 to the arts in 2012. The pilot initiative will be reviewed at the end of 2012.

The Leverage Initiative will run in parallel with a second initiative – the Philanthropy Capacity Building Initiative – which is operated by the Arts Council. Under this initiative the Arts Council will provide one-to-one professional advice and direct funding support to a number of selected organisations to help them build and resource their capacity to attract philanthropic giving. Full details available on : www.ahg.gov.ie [1]

17 May - 16 June | Opening Thurs 17 May, 7 - 9 pm : The Fold (Issue 7) will be launched in the gallery the same night. Following on from a successful launch of Joyce in the City: Dubliners at Oonagh Young Gallery with a live performance by Amanda Coogan called ‘Molly Blooms’ on April 1st, we are pleased to present the video piece ‘Everness’ by Alejandro Cesarco (Uruguay) and 3 works on paper by Vittorio Santoro (Switzerland) in this exhibition Ever/Until. The works presented in Ever/Until relate directly to time and memory. Narrative ambiguities are particular to both Cesarco and Santoro, each citing literary sources, amongst other artistic arenas, as inspiration for much of their work. Whether directly referenced or obliquely observed, the appropriation of titles, sentences or whole scenes are sometimes re-contextualised and therefore reevaluated. Curated by Christa-Maria Lerm Hays and Oonagh Young. | www.oonaghyoung.com [1]

May 26, 2012 | 3:00pm | Ormston House, 9-10 Patrick Street, Limerick City, Ireland | In this afternoon talk, controversial Dutch artist TINKEBELL shares an insight into her artistic practice. This event is organized as part of the ‘Dogs’ group exhibition in Ormston House, curated by Rachael Corcoran as part of SOMA Contemporary Projects. Admission is free. TINKEBELL provokes by exemplifying the blind spots of modern society. She confronts a public that revels in being indignant about everything that has nothing to do with them, but at the same time is very apologetic about their own actions. She questions why millions of male chicks are brutally killed every day (often by throwing them against the walls of a barn) but she gets arrested for threatening to do the same in public. Why are people who openly discuss the lowering of the sexual age of consent treated as vile paedophiles, but are 'barely 18' websites intensely popular? For further information on her practice, please see www.looovetinkebell.com [1] | www.somacontemporary.com [2] | www.ormstonhouse.com [3]

What is the legacy of our role in this particular time and place and what shape will society take in 25, 50 or a hundred years due to the actions and decisions we make today? What impact do we have on a potential and speculated society? How as individuals do we foresee our role in the everyday lives of a future society in which we may no longer be present? Speculation has uses beyond sheer fiction, we forecast the short term everyday in preparation for the following moment but our predictions can never truly be accurate. Our predictions can however be inaccurate in a very interesting way, how we speculate currently in the present moment characterises who we are and what we believe more than any other archival text could ever represent. Our aspirations and our interpretations of what is possible define who we are here and now more so than what we believe we know about our present moment, just look at classic science fiction texts and the fact that no matter how imaginative and intricate they were conceptually they just couldn’t shake certain social bias and perspective of their own time. No matter how advanced the supercomputer or anti-gravity system described in these stories were certain aspects of the time the tales where written in persist like the archetypal lead male or the Nuclear Family. All those who would be interested in a creative project centred around different approaches to speculation please contact E: thespeculativesociety@yahoo.com | or Steve T: 087-9873145 | www.stevemaherart.wordpress.com [1]

All those who would be interested in a creative project centred around different approaches to speculation please contact E: thespeculativesociety@yahoo.com | or Steve T: 087-9873145 | www.stevemaherart.wordpress.com

Iwona works in mixed media encaustic, where she combines the millennia old technique of painting with wax and other drawing mediums such as charcoal, pencil and pastels. She possesses a distinctive figure drawing style, in which she accentuates the movement of the body and muscle tone. The use of wax provides the paintings with a strong and robust appearance. The encaustic medium is very well suited for portraying movement and action in painting. This becomes apparent when the brush interacts with the painting surface, occurring at a much quicker rate than other mediums, due to the rapid setting of wax. | www.thedoorwaygallery.com [1]

Her recent works have been triggered by the eruptive nature of the Icelandic volcano, Eyjafjallajokull since 2010, alluding to tensions between chaos and entropy, and between the teleological and the merely random. For this exhibition, Eye of the Storm, she employs geology as a language to conceive an understanding of time and our relationship to a constantly evolving environment, juxtaposing new artworks in poetic relation with historical and geological artefacts. Early 20th century Jesuit seismograms from The School of Cosmic Physics, at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) which have never been on public view before and a series of newly realized works—drawings, paintings, sculpture, video and sound works — consider and reflect on the volcano, history, technology and mans' recordings of events, as they interconnect with human experience through the physicality of the surrounding landmass. | www.galwayartscentre.com [1]

May 19th 2-4pm | If we were called as artists to give testimony, of our reason for the hope we have, could we answer? Testimony is a term traditionally used in Christian religion to describe the sharing of how one became a Christian or a particular event where God has done something worth mentioning in one’s life. How did you become an artist? What drives you to continue your practice? What struggles have tested your hope?

You are invited to give testimony, but give it in a language that is accessible and does not hide behind the vagueness of some artistic expressions. What hope in art means in your lived experience and to share this with an understanding that the audience may not be used to the language of art. This work calls not for the polished presentation of an artist’s statement but an honest sharing of our beliefs. There are ten spaces available and each volunteer/participant will be asked to bring a witness for their testimony. Testimonies will be shared with the entire group. Each testimony will last up to ten minutes and light refreshments will be provided afterwards. The event will be documented as research. If you are interested in sharing please contact Julie at miller.julie83@gmail.com | www.makingsomethingsmallhappen.wordpress.com [1]

Wednesday 22 May 3 - 5pm | Queen's University Belfast, 12 University Sq. Room 101 | Gail Ritchie, visual artist, will present an illustrated talk on her recent practice which has core themes of culture, conflict and memorial. Using specific artworks the presentation begins with an examination of the forms of 20th century war memorials and ends with proposals for new forms that reinvigorate existing models. The artist will discuss how she reactivates the past in her work and how this is informed by research across several areas: literature and film, site visits, on line, archival and interview. The artist seeks to locate her work somewhere between Monuments and memorials, where the former may be perceived as large scale and permanent and the latter, more localised and intimate. How, as a contemporary artist working in the 21st century , does she reconstruct and commemorate the past in her work? Ritchie works across a range of media from drawing, sculpture, installation, photography and sound. The art works in this presentation will relate to the First and Second World Wars, the Cold War , recent conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan and conclude with work which explores the possibility of a universal memorial for all 20th century conflict | www.gailritchie.com [1]

The main exhibition for 2012 is a solo show by Hans Josephsohn, which opens on 12 May and continues until 30 September. Staged in collaboration with Hauser & Wirth and Kesselhaus Josephsohn, the exhibition will feature works dating from 1950 to 2011, specially selected for Lismore including pieces in the gallery and the historic Castle Gardens. The exhibition offers a rare opportunity to enjoy key works from an internationally important artist.

Josephsohn, now in his 90s, is a highly regarded artist and his practice continues to inform and inspire contemporary artists. This will be his first solo exhibition in Ireland and his first institutional exhibition since 2008. In the past decade there have been major solo exhibitions at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the Museum für Moderne Kunst Frankfurt. Throughout the summer there will be a programme of events involving cultural commentators and a specially commissioned publication will be published in summer 2012. www.lismorecastlearts.ie [1]

An exhibition of the work of Northern Irish - Born painter William McKeown, who until his death last year painted the sky of his adopted city of Edinburgh and his native County Tyrone.
Leitrim Arts Office seeks interest from artists from any arts discipline who wish to participate in Spark, a new artists’ residency programme which is a partnership project of Leitrim County Council Arts Office and Leitrim County Enterprise Board, with the support of the Arts Council of Ireland. Spark is a programme aimed at artists who are interested in working in new environments, and companies who are interested in collaborating with artists and promoting creativity within their organisations. As part of Spark, artists simultaneously take on dual roles of artist and creative collaborator over the course of six months spending an average of two days per week with the company over that period. In both roles, there are no pre-determined outcomes and the journey the residency takes will define its own path. Spark takes from international models of best practice which have shown that there is a real demand not only by companies wanting to take more creative approaches, but also by artists wanting to interact in broader fields than strictly within their artform. This exchange carries benefits for both parties and is important for developing ideas about creativity. The two companies selected to participate in the 2012 Spark programme are The Bush Hotel in Carrick on Shannon and Leitrim Organic Centre, in Rossinver, Co. Leitrim.

Artists wishing to apply should simply email Leitrim Arts Office on ckelly@leitrimcoco.ie to declare their interest in the programme. There is no need to supply any information other than an email address at this point. From that a site visit day will be arranged where artists who have declared their interest will be invited to visit each company, talk with management and staff and come to a better understanding of the programme and the companies involved.

Closing Date for expression of interest: 5pm, Friday 8th June | Site Visit: Thursday 14th June | Closing Date for receipt of proposals: Thursday 12th July | Artists Selected by Thursday 19th July | Residency Dates: July to December, average two days/week | Artist Fee: €7,000 (circa €350/two-day week inclusive of all costs inc travel, accommodation etc.) | A materials budget of €3,000 is also provided (€1,500 for each of the two strands of the residency). | www.leitrimarts.ie [1]
