Jimmy Deenihan TD Minister for Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht chaired the EU Education, Youth, Culture and Sports Council meeting in Brussels on Friday 17 May 2013. As chair of the meeting, the Minister’s role was to advance the agenda of the culture element of the Council.

A report on the progress of the Creative Europe Programme, which has the twin objectives of promoting cultural diversity and creativity and contributing to economic growth and employment under Europe 2020, was read. Overall solid progress has been made with the Parliament under the Irish Presidency but the outcome of the MFF negotiations is awaited before it can be finalised.

Speaking ahead of the conference, Minister Deenihan said “The theme of the Irish presidency is stability, jobs and growth. It is important to remember that the culture and creative sectors are sectors that can contribute significantly to the achievement of this objective. Some 8.5m people are employed across Europe in the cultural and creative sector generating 4% of the EU’s GDP.”

A key objective of the Minister at the Council was to secure a general approach on the European Capitals of Culture 2020-2033. This programme has been in place now for over 25 years and in that time has witnessed considerable change – social, economic, technological and cultural.

“As Chair I will be seeking agreement of the Council’s position on a programme that is adaptable to its times. I am keen to agree the new European Capitals of Culture for this period as Ireland is scheduled to host the Capitals of Culture in 2020 – the First Year of the new programme.” added Minister Deenihan.

Examining Aesthetics
25th May – 13th July | Opening: 24th at 6pm
Rua Red, Blessington Rd, Tallaght, Co. Dublin

Examining Aesthetics delves into the world of open source language processing, examining how artists have been influenced by a digital way of seeing, while developing their practice beyond screen interfaces. The show features the work of Casey Reas, Marius Watz, FIELD, and Pixel Noizz – David Zsauder, and illustrates how code and its aesthetic has moved from the screen to other media, including projection, 3D printing and digital printing.

Each artist takes culturally significant data as a starting point for their practice. By applying algorithmic and generative strategies to their coding practice, this work explores how code can be interpreted and communicated beyond the screen.

23rd – 26th May
Art Basel, Hong Kong

Kerlin Gallery is delighted to participate in the premier edition of Art Basel Hong Kong presenting Mark Francis, Jaki Irvine and Eoin Mc Hugh along with a major new installation by Liam Gillick in Encounters.

Mark Francis’ new large painting, Chromatic, looks outwards, taking as points of pictorial reference the graphic interpretations of data received by radio telescopes as part of astronomers’ efforts to chart distant zones of the cosmos. Such scientific advances in the power of perception have for Francis come to present vital challenges — and opportunities — for the practice of painting. Intense, saturated colour is employed in a complex but lyrical layering of fluid, translucent horizontal and vertical bands. The formal balance rests in the delicate interplay between transparency and Francis’ recognisable overlying register of hovering forms conveying the artist’s fundamental concerns with order and chaos in interconnected systems and networks.

Jaki Irvine presents 21 photographs on a wallpapered background from a new body of work entitled Shot in Mexico On the Impossibility of Imagining the Numbers of Dead and Disappeared. The images are set in the mountains outside Angangueo, colonies of monarch butterflies cling to trees in the forests, almost indistinguishable from dead leaves. As the sun comes up, penetrating the forest, their numb bodies begin to stir. Thousands of butterflies fill the air. It is impossible to fully appreciate the numbers of butterflies here. Likewise the sheer wonder of such a spectacle is impossible to grasp. This annual migration takes place in a country where the numbers of victims of atrocities has reached unimaginable proportions. This too, like the butterfly colonies is impossible to grasp, to fully appreciate the full horror of its depth and scale.

Eoin McHugh’s sculptures, drawings and paintings have recently begun to advance his analytic instincts — and his impulse towards representational mischief-making — in directions beyond painting: the distorted realities of his art are now being dramatised in elaborate sculptural forms, bringing another dimension of freakish versatility to his enigmatic, surprising art.
For Encounters Liam Gillick presents a major new installation, Complete Bin Development. A sequence of towered structures which comprise a series of open frameworks in a series of permutations. The work relates to the research into possible permutations available within car body production just prior to the introduction of completely automated production systems. At the same time the works are abstractions in their own right. The height of each stack is only limited by standard engineering rules. Each work can be constructed from any number of permutations of the wall structures. The works can be sited in exterior or interior locations. Any number of stacks can be located near each other – always separated by at least 1.50m.

22nd May | 1pm – 2pm
CIT Crawford College of Art and Design

Dara McGrath: Dara McGrath’s central concern lies in exploring transitional spaces, those in-between places where architecture, landscape and the built environment often intersect, and where a dialogue – of absence rather than presence – is created. His practice is driven by explorations of these charged, shifting entities – buildings that have come to the end of their functionality, the changing functionality of a landscape, human interruptions in the landscape – that exist in urban, rural and suburban contexts. The resultant photoworks are realised both with the gallery space and as site-specific installations and interventions.

The Market Square Project, London 2010, Paper Links Tsinghua Academy of Arts (Beijing) 2010,What Lies Beneath: Nature and Urban Landscape in E.U. Photography FotoWeekDC, Washington 2009, ECO 09 Exeter Contemporary Open, Phoenix Gallery, (U.K.).

Garrett Phelan: Garrett Phelan has exhibited extensively in Ireland and internationally, most recently a major solo exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and a commission for the 11th Lyon Biennale. His distinctive art practice directly engages with immersive and ambitious site-specific projects such as FM radio broadcasts, sculptural installations, photography and animation. To mark the 30th anniversary, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios are commissioning artist Garrett Phelan to make an iconic art work for Dublin. Launching on May 1st, ‘OUR UNION ONLY IN TRUTH’ will stand tall on the roof of TBG+S, looking over Temple Bar Square. This art work will act as a beacon for the TBG+S building and share an uplifting message as a new landmark for the city and its inhabitants.

24th – 26th May

Dive into a unique opportunity to experience island life only open to a limited number of visitors. This festival celebrates the traditional skills and crafts still practiced as part of daily life on Inis Oírr, the smallest of the Aran Islands.

The weekend will begin on Friday evening with an opening social and exhibition of local craftwork. On Saturday and Sunday, locals will share their skills and knowledge through a variety of intimate workshops. Each participant will get a taste of three aspects of island culture, including Aran Knitting, Willow Basket Making, Séan-nós Dancing, Seaweed Cookery and Dry Stonewall Building. There will be ample time for visitors to enjoy the many other activities on Inis Oírr, such as traditional music sessions, pony and trap tours, and scenic walks taking in views of the Cliffs of Moher and the Connemara mountains.

Both English and Irish speakers are welcomed, and there will be plenty of chance to practice the “cúpla focail” for those who so choose.

Economics & The Immaterial
25th May – 13th July | Opening: 24th May at 6pm
Rua Red, Blessington Rd, Tallaght, Co. Dublin

How do we give value to immaterial goods? How are digital images bought and sold? What is the relationship between economics and digital aesthetics? How can curators and artists create new platforms and models for the creation of economic exchange? These are some of the questions that this show attempts to answer. In a group show that features 30 international net artists, a unique platform for viewing and interacting with digital artwork will be created. The exhibition is composed of two parts – an online interactive website, and a gallery based exhibition.

In section 1 of the exhibition, each artist is represented by an AR-code – an augmented reality marker embedded with visual information that can only be viewed with the aid of a computer or smart-phone. As visitors walk through the gallery, they interact with the markers using either their smart-phone or one of the tablets provided by the gallery.

Section 2 consists of a video game that users can play, collecting the artworks and codes that have been created for the exhibition. These codes can be used to access a special part of our website, where a range of limited edition apparel and printed works will be made available for the duration of Glitch.

24th – 26th May | Launch: Thursday 23rd May at 7pm
Unit 1, Wicklow House, Market square, Wicklow Town
Opening times: Fri- Sat: 10 -5pm, Sun 10 – 6pm

This project has been organised for the innovaters, creators and change makers. It is a chance to embrace your inner future makers and rediscover your creativity, among the backdrop of emerging contemporary art. The project may simply appear to be just an exhibition but it is far more than that. It is about viewing emerging artists work, reshuffling our thoughts and breaking down the barriers that may be attached to art. It’s also about embodying the concept that we are all capable of change and can make a difference no matter how big or small. We aim to do this through engaging with our audience through talks and final discussion inspired by the artwork shown and issues affecting art in Ireland. At the end of the day the physical event may have ended but we are left with the ideas that were generated and the recollection that in those moments we were change makers with endless possibilities.

TLPP presents Regener:eight: Final discussion Sunday 26th May.

This will be the finale to the lost property project. It will include eight speakers within the arts that are creators and change makers. There will be speakers each with a different background in the arts. These speakers will be paired with an individual with a contrasting background to their own. Each pair will talk about a particular subject relating to the arts. The topics will be chosen at random on the day and each pair will share their opinion in relation to this topic. There will be 10 categories to choose from and these will be based on a general situation in the arts. There will be a briefing session before the discussion and information about all 10 topics will be sent out to the speakers closer to the time of the event.

Instruments
23rd May – 21st June
Talbot Gallery & Studios, 51 Talbot Street, Dublin 1

Daniel was the winner of 2012 Talbot Gallery Studio’s inaugural Most Promising Graduate Award and this show marks the culmination of his residency. The closing of the exhibition will be marked by handing over the keys of the studio to the winner of the Most Promising Graduate Award 2013.

You go towards the door of a pub but instead of going in you turn right and go up a flight of stairs. At the top you emerge into a narrow white walled room. There are large windows on your left and a bar on your right. The room is the same shape as the pub below but it is not the same kind of space. Although huddled clusters have formed around stories and pieces of furniture much as they would in a pub. These clusters are new works by Daniel Tuomey, they are what there is to be seen here. I do not wish to tell you too much about them in advance, but as an elliptical introduction to them let us examine the anomalous rhetorical feature of the above paragraph. A ‘you’ has been used. It is an unclear ‘you’: who exactly does it address? It suffers (or perhaps benefits) from the english language’s strange decision to address individuals and groups with the same word. It allows the writer to be disingenuous with you, the ‘you’ goads you, flirts with you, treats you as if you were the only ‘you’ it addresses. Even to describe it I must once again employ it. I apologise for it. It is a particularly blunt instrument.

Daniel Tuomey’s works are the result of an investigation of how stories and subjects crystallize and form in relation to objects. Often these objects are made using formal and aesthetic strategies which are indebted to various 20th century moments and traditions of art and design, and the stories that stick to them range from involved explorations of social history to fleeting glimpses of the subjective status of the artist and the audience in the art-viewing exchange. This current body of work deals in various ways with the coincidence and confluence of the emerging object and the emerging thought.in Visual Culture Thesis

TILT
16th May – 9th June
Custom House Studios Gallery, Westport, Co. Mayo

This exhibition of paintings and drawings by Marie Hanlon deals with spatial relationships, flat surface and the illusion of depth. The title refers to the repositioning of a form along a diagonal axis, thereby changing the dynamic of the work. The word ‘TILT’ contains within itself an inherent contradiction in that the strict vertical and horizontal letter forms are at odds with the words meaning. In this sense TILT becomes a metaphor for the work itself in which shifting forms play out within strict parameters.

Marie Hanlon was born in Kilkenny, she studied History of European Painting and English at University College, Dublin. She now lives in Dublin and is represented by The Rubicon Gallery.

Exhibition continues until the 1st of June
Graphic Studio Gallery, Through the arch, off Cope Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2

Michael Timmins is heavily influenced by his travels and his interest in observing the space around him. Using his camera as a means to document the places he has been, his lithograph prints become almost like a visual diary. This series of prints is based on photographs Michael has taken over the past six years. Some of the works rely heavily on inspiration directly from the photograph, while other prints take on a life of their own and become something entirely new. This series focuses primarily on the use of light in the photographs, and how the light changes at different times throughout the year.

Niamh McGuinne’s training as a fine art conservator has influenced how she approaches the concepts of permanence and timelessness, and how these can distort reality and our perceptions of the spaces around us. “Surreal Estate” explores the themes of dereliction and abandonment with an installation combining print, sculpture and animated film mediums, with 22 cuboid boxes containing etchings and prints of empty rooms. Examining the relationship between shadows, reflections and windows, and the effect that ageing can have on a place, Niamh challenges the spectator to glimpse the interiors of their own lives, and see what secrets and debris lie there.

powers + √ roots
23rd May – 21st June | Opening: 22nd May at 6pm
Pallas Projects/Studios, 115 – 117 The Coombe, Dublin 8
Opening hours: Thurs – Sat, 12pm – 6pm

powers + √ roots is the second exhibition informed by a longstanding critical dialogue between artists Dave Madigan and Méadhbh O’Connor. Here, the two artists explore their interests in networks and energy systems, both natural and man-made. Both artists will present large-scale sculptural installations using very different approaches. These include a working, handmade, ‘marvellous machine’ that is a crossover between a still, steam boiler, water wheel and wind turbine; an installation comprising the charred remains of spent organic and carbon-based fuel; an installation of living weeds growing through asphalt; and more.

By deliberately adopting different strategies, both artists seek to examine the legacy of energy production and trace changing attitudes associated with different periods of technological development, from the earliest discoveries of electricity in the mid-nineteenth century to the growing, consequent environmental anxieties of today which are emerging as a defining cultural concern of the 21st century. Madigan and O’Connor have elected to present individual works in reference to these different points in history, with the aim to expose both disparities and correlations, and ultimate causal relationship between the two.

Dave Madigan’s practice is centred on both the liberating and failing consequences of the technological age. Reworking electronic and industrial detritus, he employs large-scale sculpture and installation, which primarily involves metal fabrication and heavy construction. Méadhbh O’Connor works at the conjunction of art and science. She works through sculpture, installation and photography, and has progressively followed a path toward working with scientists and experts in other fields. She is presently artist-in-residence in the UCD College of Science. Both artists studied together in I.A.D.T. Dublin, where they graduated with first-class honours in 2009. They have since forged both individually and collaboratively-driven practices, informed by their shared interest in the implications of the techno-scientific age.

Deadline: 20th June

Critical Bastards Magazine is seeking submissions for Issue 10. This issue will depart from previous printed format to be purely audio in form.

We are seeking audio reviews, interviews, and articles about art. What we are looking for is a creative response to this call; we are not looking for reviews which are simply written and then recorded.

What we are looking for are clearly recorded, concise, coherent reviews and responses to work, that emphasise and explore how the spoken word influences the structure of the article. Although the format will be in audio form, we are looking for reviews and articles about all kinds of work, not sound work in particular.

We welcome audio articles of no longer than 15 minutes duration, submitted with an image that relates to the content.

Send submissions to criticalbastards@gmail.com. Recordings will be selected on the fitness of their inclusion in the issue.
