Deadline: 1st July

Interviews at Standpoint: Monday 22nd July

Application fee: £15.00

Standpoint Futures is an ambitious residency programme for regional UK artists, providing bespoke, high-calibre opportunities for discussion and interaction with the London art world. We support artists who are making a reputation in their region to spend time in London to make a significant impact on their practice and/or career without the need to relocate. We promote a dynamic and interactive network between London and Regional UK art world, working with excellent artist-focused institutions across the UK. Residencies are designed to be flexible and responsive to the project, needs and desired outcomes of individual participants. The residency’s chief aims are to provide high quality, individualized opportunities to develop the artist’s practice and career, and to integrate London and the regional UK art world to promote access and the exchange of ideas.

The residency offer is: 4-6 weeks working at Standpoint in Hoxton, London. Accommodation, studio and all mentoring and advisor visits are included as part of the award. Artists receive a modest per diem & travel allowance. All other expenses are at the expense of the artist.

The 5 residencies will run from October 2013 to April 2014. The panel will select 5 artists – one from Scotland, one from Wales, two from England, and one early career artist, who may be based anywhere in the UK (not Eire).

Selectors will be one representative from each of our partner organisations: G39 & Chapter Arts, Peacock Visual Arts, The Royal Standard, Exeter Phoenix and Standpoint.

A new two year taught Masters in Socially Engaged Art (Further, Adult and Community Education) will commence this September in NCAD. The MA SEA(FACE) focuses on the dynamic relationship between socially engaged arts practice and pedagogy, particularly within further education, non-formal educational and community settings, with an embedded qualification to teach in the FE sector (subject to Teaching Council accreditation).

Recognising the range of methodologies used in art practices that draw on educational concepts and forms and the potential of socially engaged art to inform discourses within education, the MA SEA(FACE) is a site for experimental learning and critical debate between socially engaged art practice and arts education. The new course builds on and replaces the GDip in Community/Arts/Education which has been in existence for ten years. The MA SEA(FACE) will attract students from a range of disciplines who want to immerse themselves in a trans-disciplinary enquiry. Applicants should have a Level 8 (BA Hons) degree in art or design or in another discipline altogether but with a personal and demonstrable commitment to the arts in social contexts.

For further information, see post-graduate study at www.ncad.ie

A Series of lunch-time talks for the month of May
Free / All Welcome

22nd May | 1pm – 2pm
CIT Crawford College of Art and Design

Dara McGrath: Dara McGrath’s central concern lies in exploring transitional spaces, those in-between places where architecture, landscape and the built environment often intersect, and where a dialogue – of absence rather than presence – is created. His practice is driven by explorations of these charged, shifting entities – buildings that have come to the end of their functionality, the changing functionality of a landscape, human interruptions in the landscape – that exist in urban, rural and suburban contexts. The resultant photoworks are realised both with the gallery space and as site-specific installations and interventions.

The Market Square Project, London 2010, Paper Links Tsinghua Academy of Arts (Beijing) 2010,What Lies Beneath: Nature and Urban Landscape in E.U. Photography FotoWeekDC, Washington 2009, ECO 09 Exeter Contemporary Open, Phoenix Gallery, (U.K.).

www.daramcgrath.com

AND

Garrett Phelan: Garrett Phelan has exhibited extensively in Ireland and internationally, most recently a major solo exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art and a commission for the 11th Lyon Biennale. His distinctive art practice directly engages with immersive and ambitious site-specific projects such as FM radio broadcasts, sculptural installations, photography and animation. To mark the 30th anniversary, Temple Bar Gallery + Studios are commissioning artist Garrett Phelan to make an iconic art work for Dublin. Launching on May 1st, ‘OUR UNION ONLY IN TRUTH’ will stand tall on the roof of TBG+S, looking over Temple Bar Square. This art work will act as a beacon for the TBG+S building and share an uplifting message as a new landmark for the city and its inhabitants.

Deadline: 20th June

Critical Bastards Magazine is seeking submissions for Issue 10. This issue will depart from previous printed format to be purely audio in form.

We are seeking audio reviews, interviews, and articles about art. What we are looking for is a creative response to this call; we are not looking for reviews which are simply written and then recorded.

What we are looking for are clearly recorded, concise, coherent reviews and responses to work, that emphasise and explore how the spoken word influences the structure of the article. Although the format will be in audio form, we are looking for reviews and articles about all kinds of work, not sound work in particular.

We welcome audio articles of no longer than 15 minutes duration, submitted with an image that relates to the content.

Send submissions to criticalbastards@gmail.com. Recordings will be selected on the fitness of their inclusion in the issue.
