This introductory level workshop will take five art historical themes and introduce them through lectures and practical art workshops. Over the course of the five days, participants will be introduced to key art movements of the modern period. The aim is to build a creative vocabulary through the use of materials and group discussion.
• This course will build confidence through observation and creative workshops
• Build a greater vocabulary and understanding of art movements in the modern period
• Gain experience with varied materials and methods used in art practice
Each morning, one of the five themes will be introduced through slides and film, each afternoon will be dedicated to practical exercises:
Impressionism through watercolour painting;
Cubism through still-life drawing;
Dadaism and Surrealism through collage and montage;
Pop Art through the stencil; and
Postmodernism through the use of 3D object and metaphor.
There is an emphasis on experimentation rather than creating a perfect art object. No previous experience necessary. A list of required art materials will be given prior to the course, many of which are available to buy from the art shop at Burren College of Art.
