28 July to 15 August
Opening on Friday 28 July, 6pm
Blue House Gallery, Schull, will be showing work by West Cork artists Donagh Carey, Wendy Dison, Barry Linnane and Catherine Weld.
The inspiration of living in West Cork provides a common theme that unites the diverse approaches of the four artists. For both Donagh and Wendy, the rural landscape’s relationship with its human inhabitants, both ancient and contemporary, is frequently referenced. Wendy’s recent work has also been informed by a sense of absence, the old field boundaries and tracks over the hills reminding her of the uses to which this land was put in the past. Donagh’s home faces the Atlantic and inevitably his work acknowledges the ever changing state of light and weather on the sea and land. Catherine Weld’s paintings are her response to the physical and emotional experience of being in the landscape which she aims to express through the physicality of paint, charcoal, pencil or ink on canvas or paper.
Sculptor Barry Linnane is best known for large public works in metal, such as the one on Bantry pier, but he also enjoys creating smaller gallery pieces suitable for the home and garden. Having grown up around boats and harbours, he is inspired by crossing points: coastline, harbour, man and boat, architecture, atmosphere, weather and character. These are reflected through design, texture, colour and presence.
