In advance of the March for Choice this September 30th, the Artists’ Campaign to Repeal the Eighth Amendment will present A Day of Testimonies at Project Arts Centre.
Recognising the complexities of the human situation is traditionally the artist’s role. A Day of Testimonies will bring together Ireland’s leading performers and creators to reflect both the complexity of the issue and the simple truth that women’s health is put at risk because of the Eighth Amendment to the Constitution.
The day will consist of a series of events, visual arts installation and a powerful film programme culminating in an evening event in the theatre directed by Lynne Parker, Artistic Director Rough Magic Theatre Company. This intimate performance will honour the testimonies given by citizens directly affected by the Eighth Amendment, with a special evening of performance of music, poetry and contemplation on the human impact and consequence of the Eighth Amendment, presented by some of Irelands best loved performers and artists. A full line up of performers will be announced in mid-August.
A Day of Testimonies will also present a film programme featuring a selection of historical films and documentaries dealing with the lack of abortion access and impact of the Eighth Amendment on women’s lives in Ireland. Included is 50,000 Secret Journeys an RTE commissioned documentary, featuring testimonies from women who have had to travel abroad to get an abortion, filmed over 20 years ago and only shown once before, and the short film Statistic, made in 1983 just after the referendum on abortion, now being restored by the Irish Film Institute.
