OUTSIDER is an exhibition of new print work by Liz Byrne made at Leitrim Sculpture Centre, 2017.
Byrnes work is inspired by the journeys she makes outside in the landscape of North Leitrim. Being outside engages the senses, triggers memory and exercises the imagination, providing many of the initial gestures and responses for developing new work. Using small sketchbook drawings as a means of observation Byrne records a series of concepts and impressions that examine the effects of natural forces that constantly modify and challenge our more static representation of the land. These meditations on time capture the moods and atmospheres of diverse natural phenomena such as the ever changing patterns of light and cloudy skies; the rhythm and sound of rainwater; the peat soaked bog; the scarred escarpments of the valleys and the affect of wind and weather on the trees. All of these find there way into the artists work through the use of simple pattern and motif techniques that recur and are re-enacted in the natural and chemical processes of the printmakers art. It is through these multiple ideas and depictions that the artist explores, experiments and engages various print forms, often in the same piece, to describe her imagined Outside.
