Archive film footage of Northern Ireland’s rich tradition of making has inspired Film | Makers, an exhibition of contemporary work. The exhibition includes new pieces from six makers responding to heritage footage from Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive. In celebration of Northern Ireland’s rich craft landscape past and present, six contemporary makers were invited to produce new work in response to the historic footage. From this inspiring starting point filmmakers TACA delved into the creative process of each maker and documented their journeys in a series of short films that illuminate the new archive-inspired works.
The exhibition features commissioned works by the makers:
Sharon Adams, using wood, metal and textiles; Sheena Devitt, stone carving; Alison Fitzgerald, basketmaking and willow work; Nicola Gates, weaving and textiles; Ronan Lowery, contemporary furniture in wood.; Peter Surginor, contemporary works in porcelain.
Their works are accompanied by films by TACA of the contemporary makers at work in their studios, shown alongside artefacts and the Digital Film Archive footage that inspired them.
