Description

Get started in oils … The perfect course for beginners!

This comprehensive oil painting course, geared for beginners and improvers, will give you a solid grounding in the essential methods, materials, tools and techniques of oil painting in the realist or representational painting tradition.

The course is divided into two 5-week modules, with a one-week break at Hallowe’en. In the first module, you will be introduced to oil painting tools and materials, basic principles and concepts which are applicable to any painting medium, and the key stages of the indirect painting approach (underpainting-overpainting, or layering brushwork). In the second module, you will learn how to paint alla prima – a direct painting method completed in one sitting, and more impressionistic in style and appearance. You will be shown four key elements of painting: (i) drawing, (ii) value, (iii) colour, and (v) edges.

Throughout the course, colour theory, mixing, strategies and palette organisation will feature prominently, gradually introducing you to monochromatic and neutral harmonies, the use of colour temperature, and finally the full colour palette. Painting projects will comprise the main genres in art: portrait, figure, landscape and still life.

This online course is packed with lots of extra exclusive content, including painting videos on location around Italy and highlights from museums. Our paintings will also have an Italian flavour to them! All live online classes will be recorded so you’ll never miss one!
