Get Together 2025 | Panel Four: World-Building
Lecture Theatre, 4:15pm – 5:30pm
This panel foregrounds interdisciplinary approaches to world-building through the use of storytelling, fragmentary narratives, speculative fiction, and digital media. A significant focus on moving image and sonic landscapes imagines new participatory ways of relating to transient environments.
[Lead]: ZAIBA JABBAR is a curator, educator, award-winning director, and the founder of HERVISIONS (est. 2015), a London-based femme-focused curatorial agency, platform and digital art studio that produces innovative commissions, exhibitions, and events with a strong focus on the intersection of art, technology, and culture. HERVISIONS investigates how people in the margins are using technology to create art outside of traditional formats. Jabbar was a curator in residence at LUX, London, in 2018, and is a board member of Abandon Normal Devices.

CAMERON MACKAY is a Scottish filmmaker and Celtic music producer who aims to use media storytelling work to spark connections between audiences and nature, to showcase inclusive solutions to the climate crisis, and to celebrate contemporary cultural heritage. Mackey currently runs an environmental impact-focused film production company based in Glasgow. Films telling stories of Highlands and Islands communities’ climate action have been showcased through BBC Scotland, international film festivals, and the COP26 Blue Zone to target sustainability-led behaviour change and climate policy development.

CAOIMHÍN GAFFNEY is an artist, filmmaker and writer, whose work has been shown in exhibitions and film festivals internationally. Recent films explore queer histories, collective resistance, and speculative fiction. Solo exhibitions include Crawford Art Gallery, Block 336 (London), Contemporary Art Institute (Sapporo), and a touring exhibition of new work from the Butler Gallery to the Highlanes Gallery and Uillinn: West Cork Arts Centre (2024-25). Gaffney graduated from the Royal College of Art’s MA Photography and Moving Image in 2011 and received their PhD from Ulster University in 2022.

JOHN THORNE is an environmentalist and Sustainability Coordinator at Glasgow School of Art, where he engages students and staff on environmental and social justice issues. John states that, for him, there is no better place for an environmentalist to work than in an art school, since design and art are key to changing how we live on our planet. Economic and social systems can be redesigned, with art to emotionally connect and to bring about positive change. John also works with engineers, marketing professionals, businesspeople and psychologists, amongst others.

JAKI IRVINE works with video installation, photography, music composition and writing. Her immersive video and sound installations tell stories through fragmented, elliptical and open-ended narratives informed by rigorous research. Irvine picks out evocative details from the landscape or cityscape, in particular honing in on Dublin and Mexico City, two cities that have shaped and informed her practice. Contested histories, sonic bricolage, the built environment, and the customs and communities of a city’s residents have all found their way into Irving’s deep-reaching and polyphonic work.
