Workshop | Intermediate Screenprinting with Maria Atanakovic at Graphic Studio Dublin
Tutor: Maria Atanakovic
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Push your print skills, experiment with process, and create a small edition of work!
This hands-on screenprinting intensive is designed for artists, designers, and makers with some prior experience who want to develop their technical skills and explore new creative possibilities in print. Over two days, you’ll revisit the fundamentals as well as exploring some more experimental approaches.
WHAT TO EXPECT
• Day 1
Getting Set Up
We’ll kick things off with a quick refresher on the screenprinting process, studio health & safety, and how to prepare your artwork for print. You’ll coat your screen and get it ready for exposure.
Exposing & Registering
You’ll expose your design onto a screen and learn how to align layers accurately using registration techniques. This day sets the foundation for clean, well-layered prints.
Inking & Layering
Time to get printing. We’ll use water-based inks and explore approaches to layering colour, controlling your print consistency, and troubleshooting along the way.
• Day 2
Final Prints & Review
You’ll produce a small edition or a series of finished prints. We’ll wrap up with a short group review – a chance to share work, discuss the process, and reflect on your next steps.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This workshop is ideal for anyone who has some screenprinting knowledge (or has completed an introductory course) and is ready to move beyond the basics. Whether you’re developing a personal project, looking to build an edition, or just want time in the studio to experiment – this is for you.
REQUIREMENTS AND MATERIALS
Students will be provided with paper, ink, screens, squeegees, masking tape and other essential materials needed for the class. They will also have access to an A4 printer and Adobe Photoshop if they are preparing any imagery digitally.
To get the most out of the course, it is recommended that students bring along their own imagery to work from. This could be in the form of sketches, drawings, collages or photographs; anything that might form the basis of a print. As students should already be familiar with the screenprinting process, any imagery already prepared on acetate/tracing paper can be brought in.
As for materials, you should bring a notebook and/or a sketchbook. Black markers such as sharpies, posca pens, permanent fine liners and/or anything else that will achieve opaque marks. If you have thick tracing paper, thin acetate or drafting film lying around it would be useful. Also bring an apron and disposable gloves. If working with black ink or paint, bring in your own paintbrushes. And please wear old clothes.
Health and safety information will be given at the start of the course, and you will be asked to sign a form declaring that you agree to follow health and safety procedures as advised. The studio will provide ear defenders.
WHAT YOU CAN DO NEXT
After this course, students might want to explore Plate Lithography or Stone Lithography, which are also planographic printmaking processes in which a design is drawn onto a flat surface.
