Description

This workshop provides practical advice drawn from Catherine Hemelryk’s experience working in the arts over the past 20 years. She trained as an artist and then as a curator at the Royal College of Art and has worked across Europe with a wide range of institutions and initiatives. This ranges from curating freelance exhibitions in Berlin and Belgrade to being invited for residencies in the Netherlands, UK and Georgia and organisations such as CAC Vilnius and CCA Derry~Londonderry where she is currently Curator. She has worked with artists at all stages of their careers, collections, private and public, offsite, online and in gallery settings and she brings this knowledge to this workshop.

Entering the art world can feel both exciting and overwhelming. Catherine brings a practical approach to navigating the opportunities out there, making your own opportunities and ways to avoid burnout whilst maintaining integrity at every turn.

Catherine Hemelryk is a curator and Director of CCA Derry~Londonderry, Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and member of the British Art Network’s steering group. Catherine is a mentor, guest lecturer, editor, consultant and advisor. Under Catherine’s leadership, CCA was a Finalist for Art Fund Museum of the Year 2021 and during her time working at NN, Northampton, she led the organisation to achieve NPO status from Arts Council England. She was previously Curator at CAC Vilnius as well as working freelance with projects and curatorial residencies spanning Europe including GeoAIR Tbilisi, Sea Foundation Tilburg, Magacin Belgrade, Galerie Antje Wachs Berlin and Wysing Arts Centre, Cambridgeshire.
