3-Day Portrait Painting Studio Workshop with Classical Art Atelier, Waterford

This 3-day studio workshop covers the two approaches to portrait painting in oils: the traditional underpainting-overpainting method and the alla prima method.

Underpinning both of these practices, you will be shown a solid understanding of the essential aspects of portraiture and painting, and the techniques required to produce a realistic and recognisable depiction of your subject. The academic and alla prima approaches to portrait painting are not mutually exclusive, nor do they present a choice of traditional versus modern; they are much more fluid than that, as you’ll see, for instance, in the work of 17th-century painters like Frans Hals or Velázquez.

This workshop allows you to explore both ways of working, giving more time and consideration to the structural elements by taking the slower and steadier indirect approach, and in turn, boosting your confidence and skill needed for the faster wet-into-wet alla prima style.
