Lithography is a traditional technique which uses an image drawn with greasy crayon onto the surface of a smooth, level limestone plate. The stone is treated with a mixture of acid and gum arabic, which etches the portions of the drawn areas on the stone. Later when the stone is moistened, these etched areas attract greasy ink the non drawn areas hold moisture which repels the ink. The printed image is then transferred to paper, producing a print.
If you like direct drawing results then this course is for you. The process of Lithography offers a wide range of drawing possibilities using a variety of drawing materials. This course is an introduction to the medium of Lithography, all aspects of the medium will be covered. Over 4-days, participants will get to print a small edition and also learn how to counter-etch to add drawing, or grain the stone to create a new drawing. Time permitting, we will introduce colour printing elements.
