Job Vacancy | Assistant Learning and Public Engagement Curator (3 day per week) at the Butler Gallery
Situated in the heart of Kilkenny city, Butler Gallery is one of the leading cultural attractions in Ireland’s South East. We believe in and promote the intrinsic value of creativity to society. We are a free public art gallery and museum which showcases modern and contemporary art through dynamic contemporary exhibitions and a wide-ranging public engagement programme. Our historic venue features a Permanent Collection of Irish art. Established in 1943 and supported by the Arts Council of Ireland since the 1960s, we are dedicated to supporting the practice of both national and international living artists, along with the creativity of our local community.
The Butler Gallery Learning and Public Engagement programme is dedicated to the development of dynamic and accessible interactions with our audiences and communities. We strive to be people centred, community oriented and to nurture and promote the values of creativity, artistic innovation, engagement in civic life, inclusion and diversity. The Learning and Public Engagement programme responds to the contemporary exhibition programme and the Butler Gallery permanent collection, and produces a series of artist-led collaborative and contributory activities that reengage with the urgent issues of our time.
The Role
To work with the Learning and Public Engagement Curator.
Duties and Responsibilities
- To assist the Learning and Public Engagement Curator in researching, devising, curating and producing a compelling programme of Learning and Public Engagement events at Butler Gallery, and occasionally off-site
- To deliver the strategic priorities of the Learning and Public Engagement Strategy 2020-2024
- To contribute to future L&PE curatorial strategy and participative approaches at Butler Gallery
- To work with L&PE Curator in implementing all aspects of the L&PE activities and events programme, including but not limited to programmes for schools and teachers, children, youth and adult learning programmes, family events, exhibition and collection related events, artists residencies, artists talks, access programmes and assistive technology, national and international engagement events, artists film programme and special projects
- To devise and implement supports and programmes for maximum access and inclusion
- To contribute to the financial management and budgetary control of L&PE activities
- To contribute to funding applications, devise revenue driven programmes and liaise with private donors and funding bodies to support the core budget of the L&PE programme
- To promote the L&PE programme on the Butler Gallery website, social media channels, and external media including but not limited to print and radio media. This includes content creation for Instagram, facebook, youtube/vimeo and tik tok to promote the L&PE and deliver online learning opportunities.
- To write website copy, produce reports and write professional articles about the L&PE programme
- To develop and maintain strong community partnerships and collaborations
- To develop and maintain policies and procedures, relevant to the L&PE programme and in line with national and EU legislation
- To work with artists through commissioning, supporting and producing relevant new work to the L&PE programme, ensuring good working conditions throughout our programmes
- To liaise with and support the work of the Butler Gallery artists panel
- To implement strong evaluation processes in our programmes
- To represent the gallery at public events, including public speaking opportunities
The Successful Candidate will have:
- An extensive knowledge of learning, public engagement and participative art practices
- A demonstrable capacity to curate and produce art programmes with a public institution
- Experience of working with artists, particularly in the areas of collaboration, participation or learning environments
- The capacity to work as part of a team or to be self-directed, as necessary
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Excellent writing and communication skills
- Excellent administration and project management skills
- Excellent computer literacy
- Ability to work under pressure, and work flexibly and cooperatively as part of a team
The following qualities are desirable:
- Experience working with schools or groups of children and young people
- Experience of speaking in public about modern and contemporary art
- Experience in writing on art and learning/engagement/community work
- Fundraising experience
