In this 5-week intensive online course, aimed at intermediate to advanced painters, we examine in detail Rembrandt’s working materials, methods and techniques, by focusing on and copying one of his self-portrait paintings.
Over the 5 weeks, we will explore Rembrandt’s supports, grounds, oil paint pigments and modern equivalents, and mediums. We will also work through the four stages of his painting process, as listed by his contemporary, Gerard de Lairesse:
- Retouching or Finishing
Each class will include many demonstrations, guiding you in detail through Rembrandt’s painting process, discussion about his oil painting methods and techniques, and practical exercises which can be submitted by email for individual appraisal. Detailed notes will be given, which include some historical and background information about the artist and his painting.
The technical information presented here is based on the findings of the Rembrandt Research Project (RRP), an initiative started in 1968 by the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, led by Ernst van de Wetering. The purpose of this project was to discover new facts about Rembrandt’s works, as well as to organise, categorise, and authenticate them.
