Bloomers would like to announce an Open Call for artists interested in submitting work for inclusion in Issue 06 of Bloomers Magazine titled Hypertext.
Hypertext is a collection of perspectives exploring the interface between the organism and technology, our acceleration toward the digital sphere – emphasising how these ideas concern storytelling and languages we use.
Bloomers are interested in publishing work by artists who have produced visual art thematically related to the digital, the biological, language or the spaces in between.
The issue addresses ideas that concern cyborgian theory and how the language we use is implicated by these ideas. A cyborg is an entity that integrates biological systems with automated enhancements that allow that entity to adapt to environments in which they otherwise would not flourish. This is an emancipatory move, and with it – cyborgs are freed of the constraints of biology. This also suggests a way out of the maze of dualisms in which we have explained our bodies and our tools to ourselves, one of those tools or technologies – being the language we use to communicate.
The tension between the digital and biological is exacerbated by events where we are reminded of our humanity, the organisms we exist as and the pursuit of preserving parts of our being and evolving other parts – to ultimately overcome the biology we strive to protect. As we navigate a world dramatically altered by the COVID-19 pandemic, we are confronted with the porousness of the boundary between organism and technology and our acceleration toward the digital sphere. The fictional potential of the cyborg is catalytic in our evolution, shaping our questions and answers – a definition that is expanding, adding chapters to an infinite story.
Bloomers is an independent arts organisation committed to the discussion of emerging artists based in Ireland which prioritises work by women, BAME, disabled artists and artists marginalised due to their gender expression or sexual identity.
