Clonmel Junction Arts Festival, in partnership with Tipperary Museum of Hidden History, is calling on artists to submit proposals for our Boatmen of Clonmel Art Trail, a collection of temporary public art installations at a selection of locations along the River Suir in Clonmel. This open call asks for responses to river- and boat-related archival & artefact material from the Tipperary Museum of Hidden History collection.
‘The Boatmen of Clonmel’ project is a centrepiece of the 2020 Festival (which runs from 4th – 12th July) and will create an imaginative link with Clonmel heritage, bringing to life the stories and people behind that heritage. The Boatmen Art Trail will exhibit river- and boat-related material from the collection with the artists’ responses to that material, to be exhibited along the Suir at a range of locations, both interior and exterior.
Five artists will be selected to create temporary installations to be exhibited in Clonmel for the period of the Festival. There are two briefs: one for larger installations (2 in total) and one for smaller (3 in total).

- Denis Burke Park
- Mulcahy Park
- New Quay private car park (Camida)
- Suir Island (depending on a Biosecurity and Health & Safety assessment)
Budgets are inclusive of all artist fees, material costs, travel and expenses. The festival will also provide support in publicity, invigilation and technical support if required.
Junction Festival are open to all kinds of materials and welcome applications from artists at all stages of their career.
Installations may incorporate elements of sculpture, painting, light, moving image, photography, murals, temporal and time based events, sound art, performance art, kinetic, interactive and participatory works.
The final selection will be undertaken by a Panel including a Professional Practicing Artist, representatives of Clonmel Junction Arts Festival and Tipperary Museum of Hidden History. Artists may be invited to present their proposal to the Panel before the final selection is made. Where the Selection Panel considers that no submission has met with the criteria set out in the briefing document they may decide to consider other commissioning options.
