Residency | Beyond 2022, Decade of Centenaries Artist-in-Residence Scheme 2021

The Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts, Gaeltacht, Sport and Media is the lead Department for the coordination of the Decade of Centenaries Programme 2012-2023. One of the new elements of the Programme is the Artist-in-Residence scheme for National Cultural Institutions and other key partners.

The focus for 2021 is on bodies that hold and/or present material with a direct connection to the 1912-1923 period being marked by the Decade of Centenaries and to bring those historical collections to new audiences.

The following 5 bodies will host an artist-in-residence in 2021 under the Decade of Centenaries programme:

• Beyond 2022: Irelands Virtual Record Treasury
• Military Archives
• National Archives
• National Library of Ireland
• National Museum of Ireland

Each body will engage an artist selected from a specific discipline or a range of artistic disciplines (depending on the bespoke requirements/emphasis of that body) to reflect on specific collections identified by the Institution and a theme or themes falling under the scope of the Decade of Centenaries.

Beyond 2022 Residency

The Beyond 2022 Decade of Centenaries Artist in Residence will be embedded with an enthusiastic historical research team reconstructing lost archives from across seven centuries of Irish history. The residency is based at the Trinity Long Room Hub, Arts and Humanities Research Institute where the Artist will benefit from a vibrant, interdisciplinary intellectual community of academics and researchers on Irish history, literature and the creative arts. Digital Humanities, at the interface of technology and the Arts and Humanities, is a key part of Beyond 2022’s activity.

Objectives:

• To expose and explore new perspectives on and ways of communicating the content of material with
  a direct connection to the 1912-1923 period, especially to non-specialist and public audiences;
• To develop new and original work which helps to bring Beyond 2022’s collections to new and existing
  audiences
• To provide contemporary creative arts practitioners with an opportunity to develop their creative
  practice in the interdisciplinary environment of Beyond 2022 and
• To develop the profile of Beyond 2022 and encourage new audiences.

An artist in residency will be awarded in 2021. The duration will be 12 months. The artist may have a work space based in The Trinity Long Room Hub for the period of the residency. However, public health guidelines will be followed at all times in relation to restrictions imposed due to COVID-19.

Each residency comes with the following benefits:

• A fee of €20,000 is proposed for each artist with up to an additional €5,000 available for materials and the production of proposed creative output (this will also cover any T&S related costs and all expenditure of this allocation has to be vouched by the artist and agreed by Beyond 2022). Access to the collections and expertise of Beyond 2022
• Dependent on the Institution, a work space may be provided to facilitate access to relevant staff and resources (subject to Public Health Guidelines);
• A unique opportunity to engage with Beyond 2022’s extensive community, partners and stakeholders, and to access its diverse range of research and cultural collections;
• Promotional support to launch their new work and draw attention to their portfolio of work; and
• Opportunity to collaborate with other artists involved in the scheme in other Institutions.
