About the Role

This is a pivotal role within VAI’s Advocacy and Advice services. The Advocacy & Advice Officer will act as a key point of contact for visual artists, offering guidance on professional, legal, and career-related issues, while contributing to VAI’s wider advocacy work at national and local levels.

You will support artists navigating complex challenges, contribute to research and policy development, deliver actio-based research projects, and help ensure that artists’ voices are represented across the sector.


Key Responsibilities

Advice & Support

  • Provide confidential, impartial advice to visual artists on professional practice, contracts, payments, rights, and career development
  • Respond to a high volume of Help Desk queries and maintain accurate records
  • Signpost artists to relevant legal, financial, and sectoral expertise where appropriate

Advocacy

  • Support individual and collective advocacy cases, representing artists’ interests where needed
  • Contribute to campaigns and initiatives addressing key sectoral issues (e.g. artists’ pay, rights, working conditions)
  • Assist in the development of policy submissions and research on issues affecting artists

Research & Knowledge Development

  • Maintain and contribute to VAI’s knowledge base, guidance materials, and best-practice resources
  • Monitor developments in policy, legislation, and the arts sector
  • Support the development of information sheets, guides, and public resources

Engagement & Outreach

  • Build relationships with artists, arts organisations, and stakeholders
  • Contribute to workshops, talks, and events
  • Support regional and national engagement initiatives, including artist networks and forums

Person Specification

Essential

  • Strong understanding of the visual arts sector in Ireland
  • Experience in advocacy, advice provision, or casework (arts, non-profit, legal, or related fields)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to manage sensitive information with discretion and professionalism
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to manage multiple enquiries

Desirable

  • Knowledge of artists’ rights, contracts, and cultural policy
  • Experience in research, report writing, or policy development
  • Background in visual arts practice or arts administration
  • Familiarity with issues such as artists’ income, social welfare, or public commissioning
