Workshop | 3-Day Photopolymer & Carborundum Workshop with Elke Thönnes at Graphic Studio Dublin
Tutor: Elke Thönnes
WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This immersive 3-day workshop offers a unique opportunity to explore two compelling and contrasting intaglio printmaking techniques: Photopolymer Etching and Carborundum Printing. Under the guidance of GSD member and tutor Elke Thönnes, participants will gain hands-on experience with both processes – one rooted in digital precision, the other in expressive texture.
You’ll begin by working with your own source images – drawings, digital designs, or photographs – to create photopolymer intaglio plates. Using UV exposure units, you’ll transfer your images onto light-sensitive steel-backed plates to produce fine-line, high-resolution prints with tonal depth and detail. This modern technique blends traditional etching principles with contemporary digital workflows, resulting in professional-quality prints.
Next, you’ll dive into the carborundum process, one of the most painterly printmaking methods. Using a gritty paste made from carborundum powder and PVA glue, you’ll paint directly onto polycarbonate plates to build rich, tactile surfaces. Once dry, these plates are inked and wiped by hand, allowing the textured marks to capture a deep range of tones.
Throughout the course, you’ll be guided through the entire printmaking process – from plate preparation to inking, wiping, and using the press—creating small editions and unique prints in both methods.
What is a photopolymer plate?
A photopolymer plate is a steel-backed sheet coated with polymer on one side that is light sensitive. The digitally created design is transferred to a photo negative that is placed on top of the sheet of polymer. It is then exposed to light in a controlled exposing unit.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This course is ideal for both beginners and experienced printmakers interested in expanding their practice. Whether you’re looking to explore new techniques or refine your existing skills, the dual focus offers something for everyone.

ABOUT THE TUTOR
A native of Cologne, Germany, Elke Thönnes was born in 1960 and studied at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste, Kassel before moving to Ireland permanently, graduating from the National College of Art and Design in 1991. Her practice includes painting, but she is primarily a printmaker, based at Graphic Studio Dublin since 2008. She works in multiple mediums, often combining various techniques, but her focus is on carborundum and photointaglio.
Please note there is a minimum requirement of participants, if not reached course is subject to cancellation. A full refund will be issued in this event. If a participant cancels with less than 21 days notice, they forfeit the deposit amount of €50, cancellations with less than 14 days notice will forfeit the full course fee.
