WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This one-day workshop is designed specifically for beginners, offering an introduction to monoprinting using a printing press. A monoprint is a type of printmaking technique that produces a unique, one-of-a-kind print. Unlike traditional printmaking methods such as woodcut or etching, which allow for multiple prints from the same plate, a monoprint can only be made once. The process involves creating an image on a smooth surface, typically a plastic plate, using techniques like painting, drawing, or applying ink.
Students will explore this process using the press to create monoprints with rollers, brushes, and other mark-making tools. You’ll experiment with ink manipulation, texture, and color to create your own unique prints.
By the end of the workshop, you’ll have gained confidence in using the press and learned how to create expressive, one-of-a-kind prints with a focus on color and mark-making.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
This course is ideal for beginners looking to explore printmaking techniques.

REQUIREMENTS AND MATERIALS
As students will be working from their own ideas, we would prefer you to bring a drawing or painting you have made yourself as source material. If you do not usually draw or paint, please bring other source material, like a tracing of a drawing or some photographs or images you like to help us understand what kind of image you would like to make. The more source material you bring with you, the better. Please try to bring a hard copy image if you can! Students will be provided with all the materials needed to make a print.
It is necessary to bring: an apron, pencils, pens and paintbrushes and a notebook.

WHAT YOU CAN DO NEXT
Other Intaglio Etching courses are available in the studio, such as Photo Intaglio Etching, Intaglio Etching Class (6-weeks), Print Appreciation Class (4 weeks) and many other amazing Workshops and Classes at Graphic Studio Dublin.

ABOUT THE TUTOR
Julie Ann Haines was born in Belfast and completed a Visual Studies course in Manchester followed by a BA Honors degree in Fine Art Painting at Norwich School of Art. She has a PGCE from the Institute of Education in London and taught art there for several years while continuing to make her own work. She first encountered Russian icon painting on an art school trip to Moscow & St Petersburg in the late 80’s and strong central motifs have featured in her compositions ever since.
Parts of the built environment that inspire her work tend to be quiet, isolated, old and still and the most modest of structures often end up taking centre stage. She first developed a serious interest in printmaking through attending night classes at the Graphic Studio Dublin and started making multi plate colour etchings. Since becoming a full member of the studio she exhibits nationally and abroad and her work can be found in the collections of the Arts Council of N. Ireland, University of Limerick and Fingal & Meath County Councils amongst others.
