Adults Introduction to Hyperrealism Portraiture Oil Painting (suitable for all levels inc beginners), Monday evenings | 7-9.30pm | starting September 8th 2025 | Ranelagh

Get ready to unlock your inner artist. Over 6 weeks you will learn the painting process I use to create my international award winning hyperrealistic oil painting. Don’t miss this opportunity to advance your art practice. All levels welcome.
Beginners to oil painting are very much encouraged. Experienced artists can add to their repertoire. Taught by artist Sheila Flaherty.

8th, 15th, 22nd, 29th Sept, 6th and 13th of October 2025

Monday evenings 7-9.30pm

On the first evening you will need to bring an A3 canvas/wooden primed panel. I will explain the art materials used for oil painting. Then from the second evening on bring your paints, brushes etc. On the first evening we will  begin the transfer process. A full demonstration is given. No prior experience is necessary.

During this course we will cover  transfer of the design to the canvas, setting up your palette, materials to use for best practice, colour mixing, application of paint, edges, value, chroma, light and shade, layering, glazing, brush care and finishing.

Material are not provided. A materials list is provided below.

You will paint from the printed reference. A printed reference photo will be provided.

Artist Sheila Flaherty exhibits internationally at 33 Contemporary Gallery and Modern Eden in the US, Fikva in Belgium, Gallery Stephan Stumpf in Munich, Ateneo de Madrid in Spain and James Baird Gallery, Summer and Grace Gallery in Canada.
Her work has been shown at the European Museum of Modern Art, MEAM, Barcelona (ModPortrait finalist), the WG GalleryDordrecht, Netherlands, Mall Galleries with the Royal Institute of Oil Painters in London and the RHA in Dublin.

She was awarded the Cindy Cottrelle first place prize in Canada, Honorary mention prize at Fikva in Belguim, the Almenara art prize and Tartget promotion prizes in Spain. Her paintings reside in collections across the globe.

It is her mission to share and promote this process of hyperrealism painting that is not commonly taught in Ireland but widely celebrated worldwide.

Materials List
Masking tape, Canvas primed with gesso approx A3 in size, Odourless solvent for example Zest it or Sansodor , Glass jar with lid, plastic bottle cap, palette knife (metal not plastic), cotton buds, kitchen paper / rag to wipe your brushes, paint palette, pencil, eraser, sharper, latex gloves, liquin, A4 sheets of acetate, grey card A4, gorilla tape (you can get gorilla tape in hardware shops. Our local one is Expert Hardware in Donnybrook)

Oil paint in the following colours: Titanium white, Raw Umber, Transparent Oxide Red, Cadmium yellow light, Ultramarine blue deep, Ivory black , Cadmium red medium, Quinacridone rose, pthalo blue (optional)

Brushes:
Synthetic soft bristle filbert brushes (often sold as suitable for acrylic paint) in sizes 4, 6 and 12
Round hog haired brushes in sizes 4 and 6 Small round brush for detail in size 0
Rigger brush
selection of makeup brushes
