Layering and Sampling in Contemporary International Painting – Maurice Qullinan, Artform
Date: 13th Sept – 15th Sept 2021
Medium: All media
Participants: Maximum 8
Course level: Intermediate – Advanced
This course looks at current international trends in painting and drawing, (which has re-emerged as a genre in itself).
The course will aim to empty out your current paintings and drawings (sort of a spring clean!) and look afresh at current developments and strategies in contemporary practice, in turn using some of these to inform and challenge our developed conceptions and current work, the outcome being new strategies and possibilities to refill and refresh each participants visual vocabulary.
Currently, painting is focused on developing structure through ‘sampling’ – picking elements from the history of art and general culture and reinventing and moulding pictorial form for its own sake. Current international painting tends to be a collage of print, painterly techniques and appropriated images and industrial processes, seemingly at variance with each other, which through this edgy discordance form a contented multi part marriage.
We examine the most important developments, the leading exponents of this twenty first century ‘mannerism’ and role of the galleries and museums in pushing this agenda through studio based workshops, which aim to develop and extend each participants current practice.
While the course is centred around drawing / painting we will use as many mediums as possible, drawing upon the richness of print, collage and photography as the underlying architectural foundation currently employed to construct contemporary artworks.
