WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
This workshop introduces the student to the reduction technique of relief printmaking, where a multicolour image is cut using sharp tools, and printed in stages from a single block of wood. The grain of the wood becomes an intrinsic part of the image, which is the charm of this medium.
Students will be shown how to adapt their own imagery to the technique, how to handle the cutting tools, rollers and printing press, choose suitable paper, register the block for different colours and how to present their final finished edition of prints.
Students will leave the workshop with a small edition of prints and the knowledge of how to use the technique in their own home or studio setting.

WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
The woodblock workshop is suitable for both complete beginners to art or printmaking and intermediate level.

REQUIREMENTS AND MATERIALS
Students will be provided with an A5 size block of birch plywood, ink, printing paper, and latex gloves.
Bring some source material that inspires you; this can be drawings, photographs, photocopies, postcards, or sketches, but on paper, please, (not just on a phone or tablet), keeping in mind the A5 dimensions of 210 x 148 mm.
Please bring an apron to protect your clothes. Please also bring tracing paper, pencils, a medium tip permanent marker if possible, and carbon paper. A packet of Baby Wipes (not Water Wipes) is very useful during the inking and printing stages of the process.

All materials will be provided excluding wood carving tools. There are tools available to purchase at the Graphic Studio at €25 per set.
A wide variety of tools are also available from Gough Tools, 24 Mary St, Dublin or online from Intaglio Printmakers, London: intaglioprintmaker.com

WHAT YOU CAN DO NEXT
Other relief printmaking courses available in the studio are Linocut, Mokuhanga (beginner and intermediate).
