Anishta Chooramun Awarded RHA Graduate Studio Award 2018

The RHA School is delighted to announce the recipient of the RHA Graduate Studio Award 2018 as Anishta Chooramun (IADT). This award is funded by the generosity of RHA Friends and offers the recipient a one-year fully funded studio in the RHA and a cash prize of €2,500 (courtesy of the RDS Visual Arts Awards). A selection panel consisting of Colin Martin (RHA School Principal), Patrick T. Murphy (RHA Director) and Ruth Carroll (RHA Curator) viewed all work exhibited in the RDS Visual Arts Award 2018.

Born in Mauritius, Chooramun currently lives, works and studies in Dublin. A recent graduate from IADT Dún Laoghaire with a BA (Hons) in Art, Chooramun is currently completing a MA in Art Research and collaboration (ARC).

Chooramun’s work is informed by the diverse components that create our society – a society as a jigsaw puzzle, how people co-exist and how one completes the other. As we move through the environment, progress from one place to another, encounter different aspects of life, meet new individuals, or encounter a novel situation, we transform who we are and shape our identity. We pick up and add to aspects of our identity, we also let go of identity markers that no longer fit us. Whilst these changes help us grow and become who we are, we also lose a little of ourselves as individuals.

The process of making the artworks are self-educating, during the fabrication of the final work Chooramun adjusts to the materials and scale. Exposing the fragmentation of thought and feelings, Chooramun’s sculptures create an abstract jigsaw puzzle, comprising a series of sculptures made from various materials. Audiences are invited to move through the installed work and visually piece together the fragments of the jigsaw puzzle.
