Artist Talk: Kevin Cosgrove in Conversation with Aidan Dunne, TBG+S, Dublin

Wednesday 15 February 2017, 6pm
Studio 6, Temple Bar Gallery and Studios

Kevin Cosgrove will discuss his practice with Aidan Dunne, visual arts critic of the Irish Times and extensive writer on Irish art. In the last number of years Cosgrove has continued to pursue his interest in motifs depicting work-spaces and workshops. Painting in oil on linen, he examines his subject through a lens of painterly and representational traditions, cataloguing the workings, forms and thought processes of everyday manual logic.

The work-spaces are empty of people, often with a bright exterior light extending into a dim interior world. The traces of recent activity – tools lying about or a scrap of timber remaining in a clamp – invite us to ponder the actions of the worker. Still-life elements offer the viewer a painterly analogue of a familiar workspace object or tool. A thoughtful balance is maintained between process and narrative, naturalism and materiality.

Cosgrove’s focus regularly wanders outside of the interior narratives of depiction. Where early themes were concerned about the value of artistic work, recent paintings reference historical and cultural perspectives on spaces for religious worship.
