Assembly Required (tactical urban fabrications) | Workshop at Laboratory of Common Interest, Limerick

Assembly Required (tactical urban fabrications) draws on Hakim Bey’s idea of the Temporary Autonomous Zone (TAZ), a socio-political tactic of creating temporary spaces that elude formal structures of control. The purpose of this workshop is to examine and to question how access and utilization of public and semi-public urban space is facilitated or restricted. Participants will work together to collectively design poetic, performative objects that will be used to activate a space (or spaces) in the city.

The workshop will begin with a tactical walk-and-talk, identifying the ways in which publicness is ‘performed’. Participants will then design and test objects which can be employed as tactical structures.

All materials will be provided. The workshop is part of the programme for the Laboratory of Common Interest, a 12 day event-space to coincide with the centenary of the Limerick Soviet (April 15 – 27). The workshop is delivered by Michael Cleary, a graduate of the MA Social Practice and Creative Environment at Limerick School of Art & Design. His work explores physical, conceptual and natural structures in urban space, and how those inform our perceptions of place. He makes sculptural objects that are often developed through collaborative, socially engaged processes. Cleary has presented his work nationally and internationally.
