Child Protection Awareness

In September 2014 we facilitated a Professional Training session on Child Protection Awareness which was delivered by Olive Ring, National Child Protection Manager, in the National Youth Council of Ireland. The session was aimed at visual artists who work with children and young people, and in particular artists working in the ‘Artist in the Schools Programme’ but also other contexts such as workshops in libraries and community settings; public art projects that involve engagement with children and young people.

The Child Protection Awareness Programme is the basic awareness course developed for staff and volunteers working with young people, and is the recognised training programme for the youth work sector. The course is delivered through tutor input, group discussion and exercises. The session covered the following topics:

  • Legislation and policy
  • Values and attitudes
  • Reasonable grounds for concerns
  • Dealing with disclosures
  • Code of behaviour – working safely with young people
  • Scenarios
