Colour Linocut with Jonathan Brennan at Belfast Print Workshop

Linocut is quick to learn and with little if any specialist equipment needed. It’s a wonderful medium in itself, but also an entry point for many into the world of fine art printmaking. While one can achieve dynamic and arresting results in black and white, there are a variety of ways to add colour, each with its own particular look and feel. Over the course of two days participants will explore everything related to working with colour (chine collé, multi-block, gradients, etc.) and linocut with plenty of time for experimentation.

Day 1 – Refreshing of the basics: learn about choosing images suitable for linocut, working in negative and reverse, transferring your image, how to carve it, ink it and print it using a baren or spoon as well as the workshop’s relief press, making a registration sheet, signing and editioning your work.

Day 2 – adding colour to the print from the first day using a variety of methods:

– Multi-block printing: laying down a solid colour first then printing over it
– Gradients: how to do a 2-colour blend using the roller
– Chine collé: adding colour using cut or torn paper
– Watercolour

Participants will work with blocks of lino approximately 15cm x 15cm in size. Participants are asked to bring two or three suitably sized images which they will carve in order to make a linocut print. Bold, black and white images or marker drawings work well, nothing too detailed.
