Commission | Pioneering Places East Kent, Turner Contemporary, Ramsgate, UK

Deadline for applications: Sunday 8 September, 5pm.

An exciting freelance opportunity for an artist to create a major new artwork for Ramsgate, commissioned by children.

Building on its significant expertise in developing children’s leadership through the arts, Turner Contemporary is now delivering Pioneering Places East Kent, which is funded by Arts Council England, the National Lottery Heritage Fund, Kent County Council, Thanet District Council, Canterbury Christ Church University, Artswork, the South East Bridge organisation, and supported by Historic England.

60 children from 2 primary schools in Ramsgate have recruited artists and heritage researchers to work with them. They have collaborated with the Turner Prize winning collective Assemble to create a toolkit which aims to inform planners, decision makers and those in the education and creative sectors about how children can positively contribute to place making. They are learning about artists’ practice and they have created this brief to invite artists to produce a new work for Ramsgate Harbour which will launch in summer 2020. The children will select the artist.

The artwork production and installation budget is £60,000 ex VAT.This budget covers all materials, fabrication, transportation and installation costs.
The artist’s fee for the commission is £7,000 ex VAT. and is not included in the figure above.

The Young Arts and Heritage Leaders will all select the final 3 proposals, and will invite those artists for interview. Please note, if selected, you will need to be available for interview in Ramsgate on Wednesday 18th September 2019. The Young Arts and Heritage Leaders will interview the artists and make the final decision on who to appoint.
