Deadline Reminder | No One Shouted Stop! Exhibition at Charlestown Arts Centre, Co. Mayo

Application deadline: Monday 5 June

Charlestown Arts Centre, Co. Mayo, are seeking applications from visual artists wishing to exhibit as part of The John Healy Weekend, November 2017. The famous journalist and Irish Times writer, John Healy (1930–1991), a native of Charlestown, wrote a book based on the economic and social decline of rural life in the West of Ireland. In 1968, ‘No One Shouted Stop’ (Death of An Irish Town) was published. The book illustrated the difficulties faced in a time of widespread poverty and mass emigration and was highly critical of government policies towards rural areas such as Charlestown.

The 2017 John Healy Weekend is a commemoration to the life and work of Healy, but more importantly, an opportunity to look at how rural Ireland has changed in the last 50 years, reflect on these changes, and ask where we might go from here. Charlestown Arts Centre invites proposals from contemporary visual artists working in any discipline to exhibit in the Arts Centre in November 2017. Proposals should address the themes raised in ‘No One Shouted Stop’ examining issues such as Rural Decline, Migration, Politics, Land, and the Future. Artists are welcome to apply for a solo exhibition or to submit a collaborative proposal to exhibit as part of a group.

This is a paid opportunity. Interested artists should send a copy of their CV, a short Artist Statement/Exhibition proposal (Max 500 Words), Budget (max €500) and up to ten images of their work, in one PDF File to charlestownartscentre@gmail.com. Tel: 083 8228279
