Ireland’s largest Dali collection for major sculpture exhibition at Russborough

A major sculpture exhibition, including the largest collection of Dali works ever to be seen here, is coming to Russborough House and Parklands next month.

The Garden Sculpture Exhibition at Russborough, County Wicklow, is hosted by Gormleys Fine Art in partnership with The Dali Universe. It runs in the landscaped gardens and hippodrome from Sunday 19 May to Sunday 2 June and admission is free of charge.

The legendary artist Salvador Dali (1904-1989) was a larger than life character, best known for fantastical surrealist paintings, outrageous statements, and magnificent moustaches. 30 years after his death, the Garden Exhibition at Russborough will feature 14 Dali sculptures, plus more than 100 other works by some 40 leading Irish and international artists. A host of Ireland’s best-known artists including Patrick O’Reilly, Eamonn Ceannt, Ian Pollock, Bob Quinn, Paddy Campbell and Orla de Brí have all created pieces for the event.

“Russborough House provides the perfect backdrop for what will be the finest and most prestigious collection of sculpture ever displayed in Ireland,” said Oliver Gormley.

Dali’s most famous painting, The Persistence of Memory (1931), is often known as the Melting Clocks. His sculpture includes three dimensional versions of the melting clocks and one of these, Dance of Time III, is among the large works to be shown at Russborough. Another of the large-scale museum pieces by Dali on show, will be Lady Godiva. Both sculptures measure almost two metres tall and will be displayed outdoors.

“Salvador Dali liked grandeur and you can’t get grander than Russborough House. It is the ideal location for this beautiful event,” said Oliver Gormley.

It is almost 300 years since the Palladian mansion was built. Since then it has experienced four robberies, three extended families, two forced occupations, and a ghost! Following €1 million renovations, the house reopened to the public in 2018.

The Garden Sculpture Exhibition runs over three weekends at Russborough House and Parklands, Blessington, Co Wicklow, beginning on Sunday May 19 and finishing on Sunday, June 2.

After appearing at Russborough, the exhibition will move to the five-star Culloden Estate and Spa, overlooking Belfast Lough and the County Antrim coastline, where it will run from Saturday 15 June to Sunday 30 June.
