Event: Public art commission in honour of Bloomsday, Szombathely, Hungary.  Curated by Sara Greavu, Project Art Centre, and

Szombathelyi Képtár Centre of Contemporary Art.

To mark the 100th anniversary of the publishing of Bloomsday, Barry has been commissioned by the Department of Foreign Affairs, Project Art Centre and the City of Szombathely in Hungary to create a mural and will also launch an augmented reality animation that will bring the mural to life. The mural is inspired by the third Chapter of James Joyce’s Ulysses “Proteus” and based on a 17th Century Etching of this Greek god by the medieval artist Erasmus Finx. Barry chose Proteus a multiform; intersex, trans / non-binary protagonist that is a direct reference to the legacy of antiquity that is subtly present all around the city of Szombathely. The figure references the in-between state of a being transforming and yet simultaneously being both many and one thing, a journey of self discovery, taking inspiration from the text of the stream of consciousness that Stephen Dedalus conveys in the chapter, both the form of his narration of thought, while simultaneously the manifestation of being Stephen as a nod to Telemachus ( The Odyssey), and James Joyce’s alter ego. The Mural, too, takes multi-form;transforming and mutating through experimental and cutting edge moving image and Augmented Reality (AR). It is both visible as one form or modality and yet invisible and revealed in another.

The AR element will go live on the 16.06.22 for Bloomsday.

Date and Time: 16.02.2022,  Official opening 3pm, City of Szombathely, Hungary.

The mural is located at the entrance of the Centre of Contemporary Art Szombathely.
