This summer Daniel O’Neill returns to his home town of Belfast for an exhibition at Cultúrlann McAdam Ó Fiach which will be the artists first exhibition in his native city in 35 years. The exhibition is curated by the art historian Karen Reihill who published a monograph on the artist to mark the centenary of his birth in 2020. All of the paintings have been borrowed from private collections so will allow the public access to works not normally available to view. Born in West Belfast in 1920, O’Neill had little orthodox art training but was lucky to be taken up by the Victor Waddington Galleries in 1945 where he exhibited for many years to critical acclaim. O’Neill was selected to participate in over twenty overseas exhibitions of Irish Art that toured Britain, Europe and the USA, which were intended to showcase the very best of Irish art abroad. He also held solo exhibitions in Dublin, Belfast and Montreal until his untimely death in Belfast in March 1974 at the early age of 54. Map
