6 February, 7 to 9pm
Between 15 February and 31 March, Project Arts Centre will present the solo exhibition ‘Englishes‘ by Nicoline van Harskamp.
A second stage of her engagement with PAC is a commissioned live performance, to be staged in October 2018. Nicoline van Harskamp will be in Dublin in February to do research for that new work, and host two public conversations on the issue of naming as part of that.
They both will be held at Studio 6 Temple Bar Gallery+ Studios on 16 February starting at 7pm until 9.00pm and on 21 February starting at 7.30pm until 9.00pm. The event is free of charge and open to all.
The performance piece has the working title ‘Who is Your Name‘ and consists of several shorter monologues about names: how they can be given as well as withdrawn, inflicted, collected, hidden or adapted. Proper names cross boundaries of languages, cultures, religions and nationalities in ways that most other words cannot. The performance will represent stories from inside and outside Ireland, and different proficienty levels, dialects and varieties of language will be used. They are told in succession, forming a string of naming accounts and anecdotes, much like story-telling sessions or a musical improvisation.
Over the course of earlier projects, Nicoline van Harskamp has collected spoken and written accounts of naming histories, true and fictional ones. She would like to include naming stories from Dublin, too. Therefore she will host a group conversation about naming, and transcripts of which may be incorporated in the script for the final work.
