DATA: The Dublin Art and Technology Association returns with three guest speakers – Kieran Nolan, Grainne Smith, Kevin Donnelly.
Kieran Nolan is an artist-researcher exploring the aesthetic and connective properties of game interfaces through digital art, design critique and platform histories. He completed his PhD ‘The Art, Aesthetics, and Materiality of the Arcade Videogame Interface’ through Trinity College Dublin’s School of Computer Science and Statistics in 2019, and also holds an MA in Interactive Media from UL and a BDes (Hons) in Digital Media from LYIT / ATU Donegal. Kieran’s work has been featured at conferences and exhibitions worldwide including SIGGRAPH, ISEA, A MAZE, DiGRA, the Japan Media Arts Festival, History of Games, the Tokyo Games Show and Transmediale, and has picked up awards from Imirt, the Institute of Designers in Ireland and Leonardo / the International Society for the Arts, Sciences and Technology. He is a lecturer in Creative Media at Dundalk Institute of Technology, and Co-Director of DkIT’s Creative Arts Research Centre.
Gráinne Smith is a visual artist based in Dublin working primarily with video, sound and photography. They often depict aspects of virtuality and content consumption in their work. They credit the influence of David O’Reilly, Keiken and Ryan Trecartin. They participated in a curatorial project run by the Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda which involved the curation of a group exhibition, titled In Sense of Place: Student Select (2016 – 2017). They exhibited in the IADT student show New Translations at IMMA (2019), Open Submission 2020 in the Highlanes Gallery (2020) and in Propositions at IADT (2022).
Currently, my art as a practice is video and concept-based that utilises current technology and AI as a tool to couple visual and video processes. I like to think about the line between art and technological advances and appreciate the variety using digital art forms. I often include a performance element to explore personal and social topics.
In my recent work my performance has related to social media, data and machine learning. I like to juxtapose the quality of the narrative I am creating to the many alternative functions technology offers us. My current research is an experimentation of using artificial intelligence as an art assisted tool. I found the most interesting aspect of AI/machine learning was when it is compared with the human experience of creating and producing a piece that balances both my artistic and technological abilities.
