Ballina Arts Centre
Solo exhibition “Damnatio Memoriae” by Visual Artist Conor O Grady. Opening Friday 6 September 2019 at 8.00pm. Ballina Arts Centre, Ballina, County Mayo. The exhibition runs every day until Saturday 25 October 2019.
The exhibition reflects a selection of the projects and research topics Conor O’Grady has undertaken since 2009. The exhibition features a series of gallery installations which reference political, social and cultural issues affecting contemporary Irish society. The title of the exhibition refers to the Latin term in which a person, organisation and even ideology can be systematically excluded from historical documentation. Effectively erasing them from existence. The term has also become synonymous with the removal of monuments and can be described as a form of Censorship. Especially in relation to the structures within Traditional & Social Media for the removal of particular marginalised or minority voices from public representation.
Damnatio Memoriae features a collection of sculptures, moving imagery, drawing and other works. Many of which have never been exhibited or which have not been shown in Ireland before. Works which examine the contemporary culture and visual languages of particular violent, criminal, marginal or sectional sub-groups within Irish society
The exhibitions opens on Friday the 6th of September at 8.00pm. Admission is free and all are welcome to attend.
