The ancient Greeks described the ether as an invisible light or fire and its name derives from the Greek aithein, a verb meaning “to ignite” or “to blaze. When “ethereal,” the adjective kin of “ether,” debuted in English in the 1500s, it referred specifically to regions beyond the Earth, but it gradually came to refer to anything heavenly or airy. The title of this exhibition, ‘Ethereal’ refers to the light and airy quality of the inks and the process in which they are created. Alcohol Inks have an ethereal quality like no other material I have worked with. The inks flow and create a delicate, airy image. During the process, the inks are constantly changing and reforming. I use a heat gun and an air blaster to move the inks around the paper until I settle on an image that feels right. I see it as a kind of meditation, a time for me to be in the moment and channel my energy and feelings into the art. Delicate, colourful inks balanced with gold detailing results in imagined dreamscapes.
