Opening: Thursday 30 June, 6 – 8pm

The Douglas Hyde is delighted to present a newly commissioned and first solo exhibition in an Irish institution by artist Alice Rekab. Through a multidisciplinary practice of film, sculpture and print they explore expressions and iterations of complex cultural and personal narratives. Reflecting on their own mixed-race Irish identity, family history, and experiences of growing up in Ireland, Rekab deftly considers the making of one’s belonging through the prisms of the body, the family and the nation, exploring associated joy, trauma and self-discovery.

Acknowledging the crucial role artists play in influencing and shaping other artistic practices, ‘The Artist’s Eye’ series asks those exhibiting in Gallery 1 to invite an artist of influence to present work in Gallery 2. In this instalment, Alice Rekab has invited Éireann and I, an archive of Black life for Black migrants in Ireland.

Rekab and Éireann & I have been collaborating over the past two years as part of the FAMILY LINES Project with film screenings, talks, workshops, public billboards in Cork, Dublin and London (forthcoming), and these exhibitions.

The opening is free to attend and everyone is welcome. The exhibitions continue until Sunday 25 September. The gallery is open Wednesday – Sunday, 12 – 5pm, and until 6pm on Thursday.
