Opening on Saturday 23rd November 2019 from 5pm by the Artist, Guggi.
All the creative activities, be it Music, Books or Art are being supplanted by digitisation in this ever fast-moving world. As the singer, Neil Young puts it in his autobiography, ‘we are slaves to the immediate’, that digitisation provides.
Seeing slowly, and savouring the time to observe are my objectives in my new body of work, Eye to Ear, a visual homage to music….vision to music!
Putting vision to music was the norm at one stage, with artwork on LP sleeves for decades followed by videos for MTV etc etc. Now the vision is cut, and it’s straight to iTunes or Spotify, a blind spot in visual progress!
Has the flatscreen TV, mounted on the wall, replaced the centuries old painting in a frame? Nobody pays for music anymore, books are being ‘kindled’ and paintings are replaced by flat-screened televisions! However ‘digital’ will never replace the layers of human creativity. Painting is an antidote to this digital distraction we live in.
Music, like Art, is universal – a great source for visual inspiration. A recent history of Music in Ireland has the title ‘Hidden Art’. My intention is similar in that I wish to express visually what is essentially an audio experience. I enjoy the use of the surreal with the occasional use of humour to express the hidden language of Music.
This is Jimmy’s 10th solo exhibition and 4th music-themed exhibition.
