The Model presents the work of Peter Wäcthler. Peter Wächtler’s film animation Far Out, a four-minute hand-painted cartoon, presents visuals whose deceptive simplicity underscores the work’s narrative complexity. A solitary figure in top hat and tails walks towards but never reaches a mountaintop castle. The soundtrack for the piece, written and performed by the artist, uses rhythm and repetition to create a compelling, humourous and discomfiting viewing experience. The lyrics tell of the opportunities on the road ahead as well as the desire to leave a troubled present behind.

The artist plays with audience’s expectations and a somewhat elementary idea of entertainment by constructing the visuals of Far Out to fit the duration of a rock song. The film is composed of just thirty-five frames. The artist has described this slightly hypnotic quality as akin to that of a screensaver. Wächtler’s work oscillates between affable sincerity anc cynical sophistication, an irony which is palpable in Far Out. The choice of the cartoon animation opens a space for absurdity – at one point the moon explodes in the sky – as the narration becomes disjointed and unreliable. Caught between carefree excitement and uncertainty, Wächtler’s work is rich with pathos, melancholic and farcical.

Opening on February 22nd at  pm with a live performance by the artist. The exhibition and talk is part of a series of Plug-In exhibitions, presented as part of the associated programme alongside the exhibition Turbulence.a four-minute hand-painted cartoon, presents visuals whose deceptive simplicity underscores the work’s narrative complexity.
