Fragmented Mind | Michael Hales at Kenmare Butter Market, Kerry

“Fragmented mind” is the accumulation of a body of work which started about one year before the first lockdown. The initial idea focused on the relationship between reality and memory, specifically of places. With the onset of COVID-19 the choice of visiting places was no longer available. The work became based entirely on fragmented memories. The paintings evolved through a process of juxtaposition, by placing various images, colours and shapes which gave the suggestion of places. The work attempts to understand the relationship between being somewhere and reminiscing about previous visits. The paintings are constructed through a rational process of placement and competition. This continues from the idea of having no one particular viewpoint but considering objects and exploring them.
